They can be worn while working out with shoes, although I would say it would defeat the purpose. Most shoes are narrow and this tool is used to counteract the affects of narrow shoes. If you are worried about walking around bare foot with them on, I would suggest wearing them with socks at the most.

How long does it usually take to correct the issue?

My husband uses them intermittently; he says that they are not easy to place and makes his toes numb; who knows he should have ordered the larger ones.
