Every tech needs a "prosumer" scanner to augment the shop one, this is a great one!
I bought this and a Lenovo tablet and rugged cover to use it with, I'm a professional tech (master for 30 years, L1 for 16). This has some cons, I think for what you get it's worth dealing with them. Here are some of the features I really like and bought the tool for. The adapter is pretty nice, not just a rehashed ELM or some other Bluetooth, it has a light, seems to link up and have really good speed. It's bidirectional, and can mostly read every module on a vehicle (I'm in the USA so your experience may differ). It has an autoscan feature that works pretty well. I only get out a factory tool (or equivalent from a big name tool manufacture that costs 6000-9000 US) on occasion, normally I am just pulling a code, then running down some things manually, maybe taking a peek at pattern failures and making a plan of attack from there. I have fixed thousands of cars just with a cheap dongle in my top left pocket and my cell phone, but this has actual features. The autoscan is fast, you can connect, let it identify the car which usually works very well, do an auto scan, maybe take a quick peek at the data for some more info, then when you back out to the main menu save a report which you can email to a customer, or to yourself and prink out for the customer (which is what I do). It's pretty feature packed, does a LOT of what a higher priced tool can do. Data seems pretty good. Are there cons? Of course. The updates take a century to download and install. Sometimes the program itself freezes and you have to manually shut it down to get going again. There is no "Home" butten or link so to get back to the opening menu you literally have to hit the back button however many steps you are away from it, it's REALLY annoying and not well thought out. Some of the more simple tests or activations, e brake retraction etc, do not work well at all (sometimes they just don't). The "voltage" on the dongle... yeah just do yourself a favor and stick a piece of electrical tape right over that useless thing. It's ALWAYS wrong, and I verified this by testing voltage at the connector like ten different times, using a couple different devices (Power probe with a digital, DVOM, etc. Just don't let yourself be sucked down the rabbit hole because of that meter. Trust me I know! All the negatives aside, I don't think you can get a better unit for the price this sells for, and even less money if you already have a tablet, or you want to use a cell phone etc. I have old eyes so I got a tablet. Even with that expense this was totally worth the money. BUT, if you are looking for a professional scanner, this isn't really what you want. I got this to augment the good scanners and have a fast easy interface to get a partial read on what's going on on a better screen, get some bidirectional features, etc. Not as a go it alone scanner. But it's good.

The Best Budget, Bi-directional Scan Tool
I've been using scan tools for over 15 years, but until now, I could only justify using a standard OBD2 reader that provided ECU codes. While those are useful for troubleshooting, modern vehicles have many different modules that can't be scanned by a standard OBD2 reader. Not only can the XTool A30M scan those modules, it can also interact with them through it's bi-directional capability, allowing you to run tests and even actuate controls manually. So far, I have scanned these cars: 2007 Chevy Malibu 2008 Lexus RX350 2009 Nissan Versa 2013 Ford Focus 2016 Kia Cadenza 2020 Toyota Tundra I've included several screenshots that demonstrate some of the codes I've encountered. I downloaded the Anyscan app from the Google Play Store onto an inexpensive ONN Android tablet from Wal-Mart. It functions at what I would consider a normal speed when connecting to the vehicle computer. While some reviewers have complained about connection speed, I suspect that is related to the age of the phone or tablet they were using to run the app. The only issue I had was not being able to connect to the car immediately after installing the app. This was solved by rebooting the tablet and I have had no more problems since. Bluetooth range from the device to my tablet is around twenty feet, but is likely going to depend on your equipment's capabilities. In most cases, I'm sitting in the car or standing next to it, so range is not an issue for me. XTool customer service has been excellent, both before and after my purchase. They usually respond to emails within 24 hours and are courteous and helpful. This is a company based in China, and they have better customer service than many American companies. One of the main selling points for me was the free updates. The other two tools that I was considering provide one free year of updates and then you have to pay $60 to $100 per year after that if you want to keep your software current. That's not a big deal for a professional mechanic, but for someone who just wants to work on their own car, it seems like a lot. Also, there are some scan tools that only allow you to download updates for one or two vehicles, but XTool allows you to download all of the makes that you want to. I went ahead and downloaded all of the common makes in the US and it used about 10 gigs of storage on my tablet. About half of that space was from the files for VW, BMW, and Mercedes. I've had this tool for several months and there have been many updates available during that time for the makes I have installed. Overall, the A30M and the Anyscan app are easy to use. The tool itself feels well-built and solid. The voltage display does not reflect actual battery voltage, but that's not a problem for me as I will have already checked it with a multimeter. This is an impressive tool and I have recommended it to several friends.

It was great when it was working but after the update it will not connect with any of my Ipads.
I've owned the Anyscan A30M for over a year and thought it was great for the money. I used it with my IPad. I used it to help fix a couple of my cars and some friend's cars. The bi-directional and live data features made this a very useful tool and much better than most other scanners in the price range. The updates were free, without needing a subscription, which made this a very cost effective scanner. Then it just stopped working when I really needed it. It would not communicate with my Ipad. I went to the Xtool website but there was no mention of any problems so I thought it was a problem with my A30M. Since I liked the device so much and had a car with some issues, I immediately bought a new one but this new one had the same problem so I wrote to Xtool to tell them there may be a problem with their device. I learned the problem was caused by a software update. They emailed me that the experts were working on a fix and it will be working again in a couple of days. That was over two weeks ago and my new A30M is still not working with my Ipads. There was an update for the app (6.2.1) on the Apple store. I deleted my old version of the App and got the latest version but now It has a new problem. It gives a bluetooth failure error during startup. It still will not communicate with my Ipads. I have three Ipads and none of them can communicate with the A30M. I tried an old Samsung tablet that I had and I was able to get the A30M working. I still have a few issues even with the Samsung, but at least it works. It has been very frustrating trying for a couple of weeks to get it to work with my Ipads. If you have a Android tablet you may be in luck but if you want to use it with an Ipad you may have some problems. Xtool emailed me that everyone else have gotten their A30M working again (but not me). Such a shame for what was a once a fantastic tool. If they come up with a fix that actually works with an Ipad, I'll update my review. Update**** It works with my Ipad again. This after I bought a new Samsung tablet for the device. I couldn't wait any longer so I ended up buying the Samsung Tablet to get the A30M to work. I had not been able to use the device for about three weeks and I had a Jeep in need of repair so I bought an Android tablet. Xtool kept in touch and kept helping with my old Ipad and yesterday, after deleting the APP for the third time, rebooting my Ipad and reloading the App onto the Ipad, they finally connected. I was happy because I really like my Ipad Pro but after using both the Android and the Ipad, I think I'm going to keep using the Samsung because it seems to work a little better with the A30m. I also like the interface between the A30M and the Android (Samsung) better. I was very happy with the Xtool support. I think I emailed them just about everyday and they always answered back quickly. They never gave up trying to help. I'll rate the A30M 5 stars in the future if it keeps working. ***Update*** the A30M is still working great and Xtool keeps allowing me to update the software so I'm very happy and raised my rating to 5 stars.

Works great, very fast, super responsive customer service
I had a problem with my Infiniti QX80 rear air suspension that was sagging. I realized this when I kept hitting my head on the rear hatch and wondering why it was not raising as high as it used to. After reading similar issues, I replaced the air compressor which did not fix the problem. At this point, I was pretty sure it was the height sensor but that required a bidirectional scanning tool to diagnosis and install. I looked at numerous scanners. I have three vehicles and wanted something that could work with all of them at a reasonable cost. To say it was difficult to compare scanners would be an understatement. I needed something that could work with a 2006 Saab, 2013 Jeep and 2017 Infiniti. I spent hours researching. For anyone else, here is how I broke it down: - Bidirectional? Decide on whether you just want to know what the issue is and have a chance of fixing a simpler problem or whether you want all the information, testing abilities and best chances of fixing the problem. - How many vehicles? Many scanners will only work with one make. Some will allow you to add another for a cost but many had a two vehicle limit. - How many systems? Many of the scanners were limited in the number of systems on your vehicle that they would work with. Some will only look at brakes and airbags. Some will add additional systems such as steering, tires, etc. Oftentimes, the only way to know what systems are supported is to go directly to the website and enter your vehicle information and the scanner information. This was a royal PITA. - Updates? Many scanners would only give updates for a limited time and then charge you for additional updates. Overall, this was a mess. I finally decided on the XTool A30M. It worked with my phone so I could use it while walking around the vehicle, under the vehicle, or sitting comfortably in the vehicle. It has an active support with numerous updates. Updates are free for life. I can use it on multiple vehicles and have tested it on my Jeep, Saab and Infiniti. I used it to diagnose my rear suspension and determined it was the height sensor. I ordered a new one and installed it. The A30M did not have the system tool to calibrate the height sensor so I emailed their support. I received a reply within 24 hours over the weekend. I sent them a copy of the shop manual with the functions required to calibrate the height sensor. They promised an update within a week. In a few days, I received the update and was able to successfully calibrate the height sensor as described in the shop manual. Absolutely superior customer service. Overall, I cannot recommend this scanner enough. It supports multiple vehicles including a 2006 Saab, 2013 Jeep and 2017 Infiniti. It supports all of the diagnostic systems on the vehicles with the ability to view live data, read codes, actuate devices, and calibrate devices. Customer service was phenomenal with rapid response, super fast updates, and awesome follow up. It was just a pleasure to work with.

Absolutely fantastic. Incredibly responsive customer service. Hidden gem. Ignore the haters!
I've used it on 5 different vehicles so far (2 just to see what functions it has) and I'm honestly blown away by the feature set it has for only ~$200. The software seems very similar to software I've used in $2,000+ scan tools from Autel, with what seems to me like almost 100% of the features and functions. It (very obviously) does not match up with Snap-On scan tools I've used in shops as a mechanic that cost tens of thousands of dollars, which to be very clear is absolutely not a knock on the product. This scan tool is competing with $2,000+ Autel scanners for a fraction of the price, and I get to supply my own device at the same time? I bought a cheap(ish) tablet just for pairing with the A30M and honestly it's just as fast as the wireless Autel scanners I've used in shops in the past, and pairing is seamless almost every time. Not to mention the fact that you don't have to pay for each separate module, and you get module updates for life? Autel wants almost $5,000 to deck out their most expensive scanner with all the modules and updates still cost loads of money on a yearly basis. Absolutely incredible. There is definitely room for polish on the software, though, as there are still some rough edges that could be worked out. Only time will tell if the "lifetime" update promise is kept. I've been burned on something like that before. On every vehicle I've tried it on the AutoVIN works flawlessly. Bluetooth connection is stable and reliable. The app is fast but it of course depends on what hardware you're running it on. The cheapest crappiest phone you can get your hands on is not going to work well with the app. Same goes for a tablet, which is definitely the way you should be using the app. The phone experience isn't great, but I don't knock XTool for that because it's not designed for phones, it's designed for tablets. The cheap(ish) tablet I bought specifically to use the A30M with works just fine. The cheapest tablet you can get your hands on will also not be a great experience. Use the right hardware and the software will shine. All the vehicles I've tried every special function has worked. And it supports a wide range of special functions. Not always flawlessly, as sometimes I had to do some things twice for it to register but I've had that same problem with other scan tools so it's probably the fault of the OBDII protocol and not XTool's fault. The reports feature is also very handy. Haven't used it much yet but it works just fine. Overall the A30M is absolutely fantastic. Customer service (thanks Jenny!) is very responsive and patient. If you are on the fence about buying it—just do it. Ignore the people that says they can't get the app to work or the bluetooth isn't reliable or it's slow. I can assure you that this is very likely user error and not an issue with the product. Follow the instructions and the device and the app will work fine; and if there's something you can't figure out, support is very responsive (for me I've always gotten a reply within 2 days). I was not compensated or pressured to leave this review for a discount or free products. I paid full price for my A30M, as well as the tablet from an unrelated brand that I'm using the software on.

Best investment ever!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 10 STARS! This Tool Proved the Shop Wrong and Saved Me Thousands! If you do any work on your own cars, STOP SEARCHING AND BUY THIS. The XTOOL Anyscan A30M V2.0 is the best investment I’ve ever made. It has already paid for itself ten times over by catching expensive mistakes that professional mechanics missed. Real-World Wins with this Tool: The "Fan" vs. "Thermostat" Mystery: The shop insisted my cooling fan was dead and wanted to charge me for a replacement. I used the Bi-Directional controls on the A30M to diagnosed, the real issue was the thermostat, replaced it myself, and the car is back to normal. The "Starter" Lie: A shop told me my starter was going bad because auto off feature stopped working and quoted me a fortune. I used the tool to check the system and proved it was actually just a weak battery. I replaced the battery and used the Battery Reprogramming feature to register it to the car in minutes. Headache avoided! The "Dead" Power Seat: My electronic seat stopped moving and I thought the motor was fried. I used the Seat Normalization feature to run the calibration (moving it up, down, left, right, forward, and back). Now the seat works perfectly—no parts needed! Brakes & More: I diagnosed my brakes with zero issues and used the service resets to finish the job professionally. Why this is the "Best Ever": The app is incredibly useful and intuitive for both Android and iPhone. Having dealership-level features like Crank Sensor Relearn, EPB, and Throttle Relearn in my pocket is a game-changer. Plus, the Lifetime Free Updates mean I never have to pay a monthly subscription fee like other brands. Bottom Line: This tool gives you the power to challenge a mechanic's "diagnosis" with real data. Don't let a shop guess with your money—get this and know for sure!

Functional and affordable, but questionable quality for long term use
Functions and connects but causes some odd behavior if left plugged in during daily driving

This thing is a beast! Total lifesaver.
I’m honestly blown away by how much this tiny tool can do. I was tired of those cheap scanners that only tell you "Engine Error," so I grabbed the XTOOL A30M. It’s a total game-changer. The best parts: It actually talks to the car: I can use my phone to trigger the fans or test the fuel pump. Seeing the car respond to my screen is awesome. No "Subscription" BS: You buy it once and you’re done. Lifetime updates are included, which is rare these days. The Flashlight: It sounds small, but having a light built into the plug is a genius move for when you're digging under the dash at night. Pocket-sized: It stays in my glovebox. It’s way better than lugging around a giant plastic case. If you do your own oil changes or brake jobs, just get it. It’s already saved me a couple of expensive trips to the mechanic. 10/10.
