I’ve been using the Pimsleur method for audio learning and I love it. (I bought all the courses, including the Premium phone app subscription to supplement the lessons…up until Level 5, the last level that is currently available)…But while Pimsleur is good at helping you to speak Korean and teaching you how to use the vocabulary that you learn throughout the lessons, there is currently not a full range of levels available to take me past the beginner/intermediate stages, and it doesn’t really give you enough written materials with which to learn the grammar points that I can consciously study. Pimsleur focuses on helping you to SPEAK Korean (through active listening, responding and repetition…and through exposure in different contexts), but doesn’t actual EXPLAIN the grammar rules and grammar points that you are using to speak Korean. This is where I’m finding that I like these TTMIK grammar books. The lessons are very short and manageable…and help to reinforce what I’ve already learned in my Pimsleur audio lessons so far. It lays out the grammar points/rules so that I can consciously organize them in my head. To be honest, though, I don’t think these books, alone, will get you speaking in Korean - There’s just not enough opportunity to practice with speaking with these books…and also not enough sample sentences and text or dialogue for you to read in Korean…..And obviously, barely anything to help you strengthen your listening skills (I HATE the downloadable audio tracks - I will add a note on that later)…But even so, I still really like these grammar books. I’m currently halfway through Level 5 in my Pimsleur courses…And recently, I read through the Level 3 TTMIK grammar book and have now started this Level 4 book. I found that I zipped through the Level 3 book in only a couple of days because I was already familiar with the material (as I’d already learned it through Pimsleur)…But it helped me to realize that I know how to read (and understand) and speak more Korean than I thought I knew! (I can’t say the same for my active listening skills, though.) It helped to reinforce what I’d learned through Pimsleur, and I was pleased (and shocked) to realize that I knew pretty much all the vocabulary and points in the lessons. This helped motivate me and made me feel good about the progress I’d made with the Pimsleur course. I’m currently halfway through reading this Level 4 book. I’m finding that there are a few lessons in here that haven’t been covered in my Pimsleur audio courses (yet), so I’m having to read over some lessons a couple of times in order to try to remember them and understand the concepts. It’s harder for me to learn the vocabulary and remember the grammar points in this book without the repeated exposure, oral repetition, and active thinking that I get through Pimsleur, though. But then, perhaps I need to actually “study” and “memorize” each chapter more. Perhaps that’s where the supplementary workbooks might come in handy? (To be honest, I’ve been lazy with those…I don’t want to bother writing notes or writing anything down…even though I should do it…..Full disclosure: I did fill out Levels 1, 2 and half of 3 of the grammar WORKBOOKS…before I got tired and lazy.) In Level 4, there are a couple of Word-Builder exercises, which are good to have. I really liked the Sentence-Builder exercises a lot more, though. I found those to be more helpful (as they give more practice and application opportunities), but they were few and far between. I wish there were more of those in this book. I also wish the English translations were a bit more precise or that there were specific translations for each new vocabulary word in the book. You might need to look up some of the translations elsewhere, though… Overall, I definitely recommend these TTMIK grammar books. The grammar lessons are manageable and are written in a way that is relatively easy to understand. (It’s more the foreign concepts that I have a hard time with sometimes.) However, I definitely think you need other materials to supplement your learning and help you practice and repeat the grammar that you read about. I wish Pimsleur had higher levels so that I could continue using both at the same time…but in the absence of that, I will continue with these TTMIK grammar books…and also look at purchasing a subscription to the lessons on the TTMIK website. I’d also recommend reading some other books available, as well, especially ones with short stories and vocabulary builders. A quick note on the downloadable audio tracks for this book: I HATE them. The speakers speak too quickly for me to follow at the normal speed and they don’t give me any time to try to repeat what they said or to try to mirror it. I can adjust the speed so that it’s 0.5x slower, but then, it sounds MUCH too slow and fake…I’m disappointed in the audio. It’s way too fast!! For the record and to give you an idea of my level: I love watching Korean dramas and variety shows…But always with the English captions on. While I can certainly catch words and phrases that I recognize here and there (I actually found I suddenly started noticing and picking out key words and phrases more after completing Level 4 of my Pimsleur lessons), I wouldn’t be able to watch a full scene (let alone episode) on my own without the subtitles. I certainly need to keep my eyes glued to the TV screen while watching….Maybe one day more will “click” with me. I probably need to “study” and practice and work on my listening skills more….and continue to bulk up my vocabulary, as well.
