Can this switch be passive (no power required) if not using a condenser mic? Or does it always need power?

It's a passive switch requiring no power. It works equally well for dynamic mics and phantom powered condenser mics.

Does is have a press and hold or toggle switch?

is this a push to talk or push to mute?

It's push to A out, and push again for B out. If you let either both unplugged, it will mute when pressed.

The latching switch on this unit is so loud, it sounds like a gunshot. How do you use a 'mute' switch which has such a loud mechanical transient?

We use that switch because over the years we have used other "softer" action switches only to have them fail. We use this switch in most of our foot switch products with great success and very little failure. I have not heard the characterization of it sounding like a "gunshot" before and hope the functionality of the product outweighs the foot switch noise.
