what is the correct way to open the door to get to the coffee filter? When I pull, I have to pull hard and it sounds like I am going to bust it.

you are correct if you pull it you will bust it! On the Cuisinart DGB-550BK Grind-Brew coffee maker it's better to push the button on the left lateral flank and it will pop open.

Can you remove the grinder for cleaning? My previous coffeemaker did this and it's a great feature to keep things clean & tasting wonderfully.

Grinder cup, grinder lid, brew basket, coffee pot can all go in dishwasher top rack. I bought an extra set of all on Cuisinart website. Now I always have a clean set with the previous day dishwasher load. A little pricey but the fresh ground coffee is so much better.

You can adjust from 1 to 4 hour hotplate. Default is 2 hours.

Can the coarseness of the bean grinder be adjusted from fine to coarse or is it preset at one level?

No, not on this model. It puts out a pretty fine grind though.
