Cube 20 Pint Dehumidifier for Basement, 1,500 Sq. Ft, Energy star

Interesting design. For those who do not use a hose, the large bucket (and 20 pint rating) means less frequent emptying. We have the unit sitting on the bucket with a garden hose attached. That's been working well. There is essentially no vibration and it is relatively quiet. It seems to be decent quality, but that's just based on what I can see and feel. It has been struggling to get down to the set humidity level of 45%. It's currently 47% -- a hygrometer sitting several feet away reads 48%. The previous unit was a 50 pint Toshiba, so any comparison would not be fair, but it had no trouble at all. This is an old log cabin. The basement is only about 240 s.f. We've never had trouble with water which is surprising because it has a 'dry stone' foundation. Some stones are occasionally damp though. Lastly, if Midea's specs are accurate the unit is very efficient. I haven't checked it with a Kill-a-Watt meter yet, but I probably will out of curiosity.

I am SO thrilled with this dehumidifier! (Odd to say that about an appliance?) Short story - We have a basement office, and when the AC unit in the garage leaked, it saturated the wall and carpet in part of the office. We had an OLD dehumidifier, which was tiny and very hard to clean, which did the job for the first “flood,” but within a week, the old one malfunctioned and ended up reflooding the office carpet and pad! Thankfully, we had already ordered this one (again, the old one it was so small and got moldy so easily), we set this up immediately. Set up was ridiculously simple (we aren’t using a drain), and it pulled so much water out so quickly! The capacity of this Midea Cube made a huge difference in how intently we had to monitor and physically interact with the mess. Within a couple of days (using the dehumidifier and fans), everything was dry again! And even so, it continues to pull enough moisture out that we are emptying it every two days. (We do have it set on a lower capacity so I can lift it and dump it in the sink/outside, but we do have the option of letting it fill higher and longer!) and I am THRILLED with the open bucket so it will be easier to clean. (The old one was NAAAAASTY.) It is very effective at handling basement moisture, it got rid of both the wet carpet and general humid basement stink, and I love the ability to change the emptying volume. Pictures: currently working (41 reading)… opened up to see capacity (this code shows when it’s open and we set it on the floor to empty the bucket)… the setup as it was finishing out drying up the floor/carpet/baseboard area.

Please do not buy this unit my 10-year-old Toshiba works better. I had this unit in a very small house the whole houses about 800 square feet and all it did was run. It could not get the humidity below 47% and it ran for probably 20 hours. It ran so much because the electricity bill is going to go up because their claims of 1500 square feet is way off. This unit is probably good for a single size bedroom with a door closed but if you're trying to dehumidify a whole house this is not going to do it it's going to constantly run and cause large electrical bill issues and also the tank barely filled so it's not pulling any moisture out of the air. Well the design is unique and something different to me it is a very bad dehumidifier and I would not buy it I should have trusted the other reviews but I decide to try it for myself and less than 24 hours later it's going back to Amazon. Also I'm a strong guy but make sure you're very strong but because trying to lift that much water out at once if you're doing a manual bucket change many people might not be able to lift the weight of it. I would definitely look into a different unit and do not buy this unit maybe oversize it and buy the 3500 square foot one might be able to do a thousand square feet or so they're definitely off on their numbers very very unhappy with this unit

I bought this dehumidifier, and when it arrived, I was so disappointed to find that it was not removing *any* water from the air. The reviews were great, and it looked great! I liked the capability and product description as well. I also have a different Midea dehumidifier, and it’s been working well, and for several years. I read this new one’s manual, tried to troubleshoot, and nothing was working. I ensured that I also performed a solid test by turning the shower on hot so there was plenty of moisture in the air. No water appeared in the collection bucket. I googled, and I then even reached out to Midea customer support. We performed tests together, and what we found, which is what I was afraid of, was the compressor was defective. But, I returned the first one through Amazon, and within 2 days I already had the new one, and it works great!! I like how big the water bucket is, and we can have a fairly steamy shower in the bathroom, and almost no steam even has time to gather on the mirrors! I would say it’s decently built too, and the cost is probably right around where it should be for something like this. The phone connectivity is cool, too, but definitely not necessary. The different modes are nice as well, but again, we just run it until we’re happy with the humidity in the room, so don’t pay attention to the modes much either. It’s very easy to move with the wheels, and is just sturdy, and does exactly what it is supposed to do, and very well. I would recommend this product

I have used this dehumidifier for over a year and a half, both in my 800 sq. ft. cabin and in my 144 sq. ft. unheated storage shed. It has been effective and reliable, even in temperatures below 50 degrees F. It's a good fit for my cabin, but it's overpowered for my storage shed, causing it to cycle frequently. Because I use it in an unheated space, I appreciate the automatic defrost (the compressor stops and the fan keeps running to let the room air defrost the evaporator, consuming 20W). It would be nice if there were an indication that it is in defrost mode (other than the fan running without the compressor). Like almost every other dehumidifier, it doesn't work well below about 45 degrees F, and not at all below freezing. It would be nice if it didn't even try to run below about 35 degrees; I have to use a smart plug with my home automation system to shut off power to it when the temperature gets that cold. Because I use it when I am away, often for months at a time, I appreciate the continuous drain function (also protects it from damage due to freezing of accumulated water), the auto-start, and the remote monitoring and management using the Smart Home app. It would be even better if it were a Matter-compatible device, and if it reported temperature as well as humidity, but still it is a unit that keeps protecting my space indefinitely while I'm away. In the low temperatures and humidities where I use this dehumidifier, it of course does not remove the rated (at standard conditions of 86°F, 80% RH) 20 pints/day, and is not nearly as efficient at removing water as it would be at higher temperatures and humidities. In my small storage shed with vapor barrier, there is not that much to remove anyway, so I appreciate being able to set the humidity level and having the unit shut off when it reaches the desired level. At a setting of 55% humidity and temperatures ranging mostly from 40 to 60, averaged over 19 days, it removed 76 cups of water and used 41.7 KWh of electricity. That's 0.55 KWh/cup, 4.0 cups/day, 2.22 KWh/day. Even at temperatures as low as 40 degrees, it was able to keep the humidity below 60% in this small space, which is at 70-80% without it running. It would reduce humidity below 50% most of the time if I set it that low, at the cost of higher energy consumption. Like other compressor dehumidifiers, it's pretty loud -- not something I'd care to have running in the same otherwise-quiet room with me on a regular basis. It's also pretty heavy to carry up and down stairs. For my storage space, I'd like to find a unit like this with a quarter to half the capacity, but it seems like units in that range are Peltier/thermoelectric or dessicant types that are not as energy-efficient and lack crucial features like auto-defrost or auto-start. Overall, this is a well-made, full-featured, reliable, and energy-efficient unit that works well for bigger rooms and smaller houses or cabins, even if they are unoccupied for long periods, even in cool temperatures. I recommend it.

I couldn’t be more pleased with this dehumidifier. We needed it for a 200sf walk in closet and it works perfectly. I needed one that could go flush against the wall and this fills that need. Most others need 8-12 inches clearance from the wall which was a deal killer. Although the Midea says it needs 8” clearance, there’s a hack! This one has intake vents on 3 sides-left, right, and rear, and the blower is on top. So if you need it flush against the wall, simply turn it 180 degrees so the backside is now the front. Voila!! All 3 intakes are clear, the blower sends air straight up, and no clearance is needed. The only downside, which doesn’t matter to me, is that the controls aren’t facing you and the wording is upside down (see photos). But the controls are so easy to use it isn’t a bother. There are very few no-clearance units and each has pros and cons. But the cons on this one are so small, it didn’t matter to me. I will reiterate what others have said about the weight-it is pretty heavy. Both the dehumidifier when you lift it out of the bucket and the bucket when it is filled with water. I have it set for half full, which I would guess is 3 gallons or so. But for me, a worthy trade off as I only have to empty it once a week. Pro tip—buried in the instructions it says to pour water out from one of the front corners otherwise it will leak while pouring. 2nd pro tip-one thing I learned while researching is that you need a larger dehumidifier than you think. My closet is 200 sf and the dehumidifier is rated for 1500 sf. The Midea is probably a little too big, but that’s ok, it’s working great.

This is a decent dehumidifier. It seems to work effectively, it looks pretty good and the bucket capacity is more than my last dehumidifier. It would be great if it simply executed on a few basic functions. Which it does not. -When it is on the bucket, it can drain into the bucket or in "continuous mode" via a drain hose. While hooked up the bucket I can set a target humidity percentage--say 55%--but when the bucket fills up, due to some flaw it continues to run and the bucket overflows. Disappointing. There must be an inadequate or malfunctioning fill sensor. Anyway, water runs out onto the floor. -No problem. I'll hook up the hose. But the hose can only be used when set on the bucket when operating in "continuous mode". This works fine, but I don't want it to run *continuously*. I want it to dehumidify when the humidity is high and stop when the humidity is low. This is not possible with the drain hose while attached to the bucket. -No problem. I'll simply operate in Bucketless Mode. In this mode you can use the hose AND set a humidity target. But it turns out that the drain hose only gets about 95% of the collected water. Around 5% of the water still drains down, as if it were going into the bucket. Which sucks, because in bucketless mode, down is the floor again. And if you put it back onto the bucket, it stops using the drain hose. And then it overflows. Onto the floor. This product is either a little over-engineered or a little under-engineered depending upon your perspective. I'd definitively rather pay another 25% in price to get one that worked either a) in bucket mode without leaking b) in drain hose mode without operating continuously or c) in bucketless mode without leaking. Any of those options would work for me and none are available. I chatted with tech support a bit and they weren't really able to offer much help. I have it running in bucketless mode over a Home Depot bucket to catch the drips, which will work fine I expect until I bump it and the whole thing falls over and breaks.

I've had one of these for two years now in a 900sqft garden apartment, and it has been doing great and saving me a ridiculous amount of energy and money on AC. I love garden apartments, but in my city they will easily get to 70%RH or more in summer, and even 72F at those levels is uncomfortable, never mind the mold risk and other problems. Central AC isn't made to keep up with that and it's way too expensive to use it to try. This dehumidifier keeps the humidity in my whole apartment at 50-55%, and at those levels I can set my thermostat to 78 during the day and be perfectly comfortable all day long, and my AC almost never runs except when I turn it down to 73 at bedtime. It also has a nice big tank, so instead of emptying daily, I empty every few days before it gets much more than half full, and if I leave for a weekend I know it'll be fine. It's also very easy to clean, which is super important with humidity devices. Every time I empty the tank I put in two drops of dish soap in and wash the inside with a paper towel, and I don't rinse, I just leave the residual soap to kill flies and prevent growth. Every few times I rinse it out and add more soap. And the coarse air filters are easy too, just bang them outside, rinse them, give a hasty dry with the paper towel you're about to use on the tank and they're good to go. No fine air filters, but also no disposable filters to replace. It's not obnoxious even on high, but I have it right next to my dinner table so when I have company I turn it to low and it's easily ignored. This would not be an ideal unit if you know you're going to run a line to drain it, I'd get a more compact one without the huge tank for that. But if you plan to use the tank, it's a no-brainer, buy this dehumidifier. I have no complaints at all.

Not working !

I live in a one bedroom basement apartment and purchased this little cube to help with the high humidity in the basement. The space I'm using the dehumidifier in is just shy of the unit recommendation for the square footage. Within the first 2 hours of plugging it in it dropped the RH% from 83 to 59, and by the following morning it was a comfortable 46% RH. The price is great. Very easy to set up. Impressed by the attention to detail and the operating options. Simple push button controls, great custom options for operation. It seems to be well constructed of quality materials and was well packaged for safe transportation. It is definitely more quiet than the dehumidifier my parents had in their basement growing up as a kid. In my opinion, it is louder than a desktop oscillating fan but quieter than a bathroom ceiling fan. I realize newer BR ceiling fans are made ultra quiet these days so think of a non ultra quiet BR ceiling fan. The point is, yes, you can hear it when it is running, but it is quiet enough not to interfere with living life as normal if you have to set it up in constantly used living space, like I have in the living room of my basement apartment. It's compact and doesn't take up much space the robust handles on the unit make it easy to lift off the cube and put the cube back on the catch bucket, which also has a nice robust handle to carry the filled bucket to where it will be emptied. Its design and colour offer a simple functional appearance that makes this unit something that doesn't have to be hidden away, it blends into its surroundings well. The cord is a good length, however depending on where you plan to put it you may be left short of cord. I picked up an AC extention cord to get some extra length and it gives me more flexibility on where I can put the dehumidifier. Lastly, the app... hmmm... it could be better, should be better... a lot better. I don't want to take away from how great this little cube is. If we could rewind time to when apps didn't exist you would never regret this purchase and would most likely be as impressed as I am. Sadly, we have been spoiled by technology and apps do exist and the app made for this dehumidifier does the dehumidifier a disservice. After several attempts of troubleshooting and hassle with the app I made the decision to uninstall the app and pretend like it doesn't exist. I can enjoy my purchase of this impressive little cube dehumidifier without it!
