The terrifying details of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake jump off the page! Ten-year-old Leo loves being a newsboy in San Francisco -- not only does he get to make some money to help his family, he's free to explore the amazing, hilly city as it changes and grows with the new century. Horse-drawn carriages share the streets with shiny new automobiles, new businesses and families move in every day from everywhere, and anything seems possible. But early one spring morning, everything changes. Leo's world is shaken -- literally -- and he finds himself stranded in the middle of San Francisco as it crumbles and burns to the ground. Does Leo have what it takes to survive this devastating disaster? The I SURVIVED series continues with another thrilling story of a boy caught in one of history's most terrifying disasters! Review: I survived the San Francisco Earthquake, - I love the book I am glad I got to learn about history this and it was very well wrote for people that have have a hard time reading long books Review: Great Series - My son is obsessed with these books!! He is in 3rd grade and needed to start reading chapter books. We had a hard time finding a book that he was interested in reading, and came across this one. He loved reading it (as well as many others from this series) because it was at his level, had pictures, and was inspired by a true event. We like to have conversations about the event and even look at pictures online or watch videos to learn more about it. Definitely worth the purchase!

Awesome for all Ages!
My 9 yo daughter has loved the I Survived series for a few years now. Truth be told, I do too. The stories are always about a kid (usually 11yo) who lives through historical disasters, and we learn about those disasters through his/her eyes. The tales are well-written and include facts- as well as historical fiction to hold the audienceโs attention. They are exciting and sad; gripping and profound; tragic and heartwarming. You can always count on the main kid-character surviving...but not always the other people in the story. Your child and you will certainly come away with the intended morals: *War is Hell. (D day, Pearl Harbor, Gettysburg, American Revolution, Civil War etc) *People can be evil: (Hitler, 9/11, maybe in a few years, Trump will be a subject of one of her books) *The newest inventions arenโt always the best: (Titanic, Hindenburg) Donโt turn your back on nature: (Tsunamis, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes, fires, floods) Animals are wild; donโt turn your back on them either:: (sharks, grizzlies) And molasses is...well. We are reading that one next. Really can not recommend enough.

my students loved it
We read this in class and my students loved it. They were engaged, and so excited to read they hated to put it down! I have a range of reading levels from students with just oral comprehension to a 5th grade reading levels all of them were able to be part of the reading and have amazing conversations. The sensory and figurative language helped them feel like they were there with Leo.

Great books, but not a ton of what there should be
I love how these books take tragic events and kid-ify them to make them less heavy and easier to read. I just wish that the books were longer, that's the only thing. And that the books kind of strayed away from the whole earthquake plot. There was more bullying stuff going on than earthquake events. But it was still great. But if you're looking for a super education, fact-crammed book then you might want to keep looking because this may not be the one. NOTE: I believe the other ones front really do this.

Good Read
I purchased this for my 7 year old nephew, who is an "Outstanding" reader, according to his school reports. :) I always read the books I give him first, and we both enjoyed this one. We learned the history of the earthquake and the pace of the fictional plot kept us reading. A good read for adults and children, as are the other "I Survived..." books.

This is an enormously popular series for a reason
My 11 year old, non reader grandson has become entranced with the "I Survived" series! These books are well written and the best part is that the kids are learning about historical events without even realising it. The author was very wise to write these stories from the viewpoint of a young person that the reader can identify with. Thank you, Lauren Tarshis, for sparking my young ones imagination and making him actually want to read!

Great series! Itโs a good choice for children who are going on to reading longer more challenging books. I love how the subject revolves around events in history.
