The solid end goes into the couch with open end facing up

how do these compare to the foam roll style? I've never used either, but they're both on amazon.

The plastic grips are superior to the foam rolls. I wish I had discovered them sooner. The foam rolls keep popping up and constantly need to be tucked in; the plastic grips really stay put!
