What is it actually made of? Is it like plastic?

It is made of material like a terracotta plant pot. I use it to keep brown sugar from hardening. It works fairly well. For a large amount of sugar I use two discs that come in the package.

Is there a time limit on how long this works? Months? Years?

You just keep rewetting it when it appears your brown sugar is hardening. I have had mine in my brown sugar for 4 months this round and it's still good. I keep my brown sugar in a sealed glass jar. I have only rewet mine once so far since I bought it. It doesn't appear to wear out which is cool, so you should be able to keep using it for years. Hope that helps.

Can this be used to keep cookie's soft?

Yes - the Goodful Sugar Saver can be used to keep cookies soft also.

Can these be used as a desiccant to keep white granulated sugar dry? Without soaking the discs

I was sceptical but these do work .. ok it's not perfect as the sugar is a little damp (which may be by design) but the lumps are very soft so yeah no more hard as a rock sugar
