A tad expensive, but
I make knives and can’t afford a Rockwell tester. These are a decent way of testing after heat treatment, but are a bit awkward to understand at first.

By golly, the dang things work. I trust them. I used them on mild carbon steel axes I knew from manufacturer specs to be between 50 and 55 rockwell, and that's what these indicated as well. I used them on steel I expected to be at or just under 60, bang on. And then I used them on metal I had suspected was not tempered corrected, sub 50. Well below 50. And guess what? These files told me it was below 45. They worked! (How many times will they work? Well... I figure I'll get my money's worth out of them for my purposes, as I don't need to test EVERYTHING. Just double check when I suspect something is off.

These work great for getting a ballpark measure of Rockwell hardness of steel. I currently use them for knife making and they seem to do the trick untill I can invest in a propper Rockwell hardness tester.
