With no accessories on (radio off, etc) you should read 13.7 to 13.9 VDC. IF the vehicle has an AGM type battery in it, then the voltage reading, no load, should be around 13.5 VDC. You can now check the alternator voltage output with a load on it. Turn on some accessories in the vehicle, like the A/C, the radio and the headlights - the alternator's voltage output shouldn't vary more than a 0.1 of a volt from the no-load reading. If the voltage reading drops significantly, then the voltage regulator inside the alternator has failed. These are simple tests that you can make in your driveway with your multi-meter.
