Can anyone solve the controller question once and for all? jmicron or norelsys? company says jmicron, people say norelsys

11/09/2019: Just got two of these. macOS System shows it as a VIA VL711 (USB 3 to SATA III Bridge Controller) with Toshiba firmware. Possibly same board Toshiba uses in their USB drives? VIA Specs: https://www.via-labs.com/product_show.php?id=44

What is the enclosure made from? Is it plastic, or metal?

It's made from plastic but it feels awesome! 8/10 for the build quality would be perfect if it was aluminum but i guess heat transfer was a concern hence plastic

Is it compatible with USB2.0?

While it is true that USB 2.0 and 3.0 are compatible, older hardware might not provide enough power to the USB ports, preventing the drive from working. Some USB 2.0 enclosures have two heads on the computer end for this reason.

Why only 4tb? it's a hard drive enclosure why would it be limited by capacit?

I'm going to over-simplify this but basically even though drives themselves have their own controllers, the USB-to-SATA chip has its own interface controller too for sorting data in and out of the drive; they aren't just a "dumb converter" like how a VGA to DVI display adapter works. The USB controller is limited in what it can "understand" and they just don't have enough processing power to track more data. Older interfaces used to be limited to just , so these are getting better!
