Fast Read From a Great Guy

I'm not a golfer but have always liked Arnold Palmer's persona. This book is a fast read on a variety of subjects, his career and other subjects, with short chapters and great entertainment. He is opinionated but such a nice guy you could never become disgruntled. Family is a big subject: daughters, wife and Father mainly. Really great stories. And of course, his close and interesting relationship with Jack Nicholas. Coverage of his disappointing losses and his competitiveness give you a good look at the man as well as his great wins. And if you ever wanted the true story of the drink "Arnold Palmer" and how it started and how he made money on it, it's all in the book.perfect vacation book. Not going to challenge you but instead give you short stories of a great life.

A Friendly Chat with Mr. Palmer

The sad part about this review is that Mr. Palmer won't be able to read it. This book was on my "wish list" before he died and it was released a couple of weeks early after he did. There is only one book to read about Mr.Palmer and A Life Well Played is that book. The chapters are short and many topics are covered. The reader feels as if he's actually having an Arnold Palmer while Mr.Palmer shares his take on a variety of subjects. There is no gossip here, nothing controversial -- it's just Mr. Palmer talking about this and that. The world lost someone special when Mr. Palmer died. When is the last time you ever heard something bad about Mr. Palmer? Never. What a great compliment and thankfully he was able to pen this book as the unexpected end was so near -- his last gift to us. Rest in peace Mr. Palmer and Thank You!!!!!!!!

Life lessons learned

It is Arnold’s journey through life. How he was raised, what he was taught, how he accepted his parents example and how he applied Their lessons to his growth, to his own life. We are all capable of doing as Arnold did. Each of us just needs to appreciate and be grateful for our parents and the lessons they taught us. Yes, golf was his ticket to having a notoriously public life, however, and more importantly, his life would have been just as solid without the notoriety which golfing brought to him. A wonderful human being, a person worthy of emulation.

A member of Arnie's Army

As a 15 year-old novice golfer, I was able to follow Arnold in the MEmphis Open. He was my hero and golfing idol. He didn't mind your speaking to him during his competitive play. He signed his autograph with a smile - AND You easily recognize his name. I also spent a lot of time walking with Winnie. I did again in the 1962 Memphis Open. They are indeed two of the finest humans I've ever met.

Man of Principal

I didn't golf when I first saw Mr. Palmer at a charity golf event in my home town of Erie, Pa.. I knew he was a great golfer but what impressed me that many years ago how he took the time to sign everyone who asked for an autograph. The next time I saw Mr. Palmer was in Florida where I volunteered at Bay Hill for Winnie Palmer Hospital for several years. Saturday before the tournament the volunteers were provided at free breakfast and Mr. Palmer attended every year and genuinely thank every person some who have volunteered for over 20 years. We need more Arnold Palmer's. Thank God for sharing such a wonderful man.

Great last book by Arnie

Fans of Arnie, of golf or of sports in general should love this book. Mixed in with the stories are lessons he learned and values he held to over the course of a remarkable life. The wisdom is old fashioned, the love of people is obvious and the humility is endearing. There's just a genuineness about the man that comes through in the book.I'd especially recommend this book for young people who are sports fans. The chapters are usually 3 to 6 pages in length and cover a stand-alone topic or anecdote. This makes for manageable chapter-a-night bedtime reading.

A book cautiously played -- and the humor stays in the bag.

I was unexpectedly disappointed by A Life Well Played. The stories are interesting enough, but exclusively self-focused -- the word "I" is unusually prominent even for autobiographical material -- and the insights into the many fascinating people with whom Arnie shared his life, on and off the golf course, are sparse and shallow. The writing is earnest and cautious, almost stilted. And most surprising of all for a guy with a big laugh who could tell great stories, Arnie left out the humor. This volume is utterly bereft of funny anecdotes, with only a few of the stories even reaching mild amusement level.I recommend this only for real Palmer fans. On the golf course, Arnie always shot for the flag. At his writing desk, he laid up well short of the green.

Somewhat disappointed in size and condition

Wasn’t thrilled with this item. Found the cheaper and other stores. Which I didn’t particularly care about, was a matter of 5 to 6 bucks. However, I know what comes in a variety of sizes. I ordered the hard cover, assumed it was one size. Was very small. I don’t know if it’s me, But it looks like it’s worn/used. I ordered it brand new! Never ever ever would I dream of ordering a used item, no matter what it was!

almost immediately after his sad passing in October this year

I'm a massive Arnie fan, and have had the pleasure of meeting him on two occasions when he absolutely lived up to his reputation as being a man of the people. The publishing of this book, almost immediately after his sad passing in October this year, make it essential reading and it's a decent book of short chapters on a huge variety of golf and life related topics. It's certainly easy to read and you could almost imagine Arnold sitting beside you telling you the story. But for some reason it left me wanting more and not satisfied - like he started me down a road on the topic but without really covering it the way I'd hoped he would. It's definitely worth reading and for sure there are a huge number of things we can all learn from it, about how we play golf, or sport in general, about how we should behave and about the right way to treat other people. But I just felt it didn't quite get me there in too many of the chapters so 4 out of 5 for me.

Very Poor Quality book

I am forced to select a star rating of one star but really I don' want to give it any stars! This was a huge disappointment. Whilst the content may be very good, oh dear, what a poor quality publication. The edges of the paper look like they've been cut with a blunt knife and the pages assembled so that they don't line up at all. I find it absolutely unbelievable that any publisher can output this trash! Especially for the price of £22.99 as well. I would expect a far better product for this price.

Not good, poor quality.

Disappointed , looked like used book with all pages frayed at ends. Was a present but can’t give it like that!!! Never again.
