What a cool, fun gift for anyone!
Bought this for my 8 year old daughter and I think I have more fun with it than she did! We both loved it. It came with 15 different geodes, safety glasses, some small tools, and instructions. However, we had the best luck putting the geodes inside an old sock and using a (real) hammer to smash them on our cement basement floor. It can get loud and messy, and parts start flying everywhere, so be careful. When they do break open, it's fun to see what's inside. We got a couple Pyrite ones (fools gold), and mostly white quartz crystals and one dark gray and one light pink. No amethyst but that's the fun in this kit, you never know what you're going to get. I would totally buy this again as a gift. Fun!

My students LOVED breaking these open and seeing what was inside
My students LOVED breaking these open and seeing what was inside. I have to say, my husband did a "partial" cut to make it easier for the kids to crack open. He used his circular saw, if I am not mistaken. When I took them to school, we used a chisel and soft mallet to finish the break. The kids still had to hit pretty hard to crack them open. However, they were SUPER excited to do so and loved looking at the crystals inside. There were 7 geodes in total. Two of the seven weren't so exciting, as they were solid all the way through. However, the remainder were beautiful, with very sparkly clear crystal inside. It was a wonderful experience for my students, and went along well with my Science lesson of "Properties of Soil". I would buy these again and WILL buy these again. If I can find a box with more geodes, I will get those instead. It would have been nice if each of my 19 students could have cracked their own and maybe taken them home for their own collections. Terrific item! I highly recommend!

Great Kit with 7 Quality Geodes. Includes Goggles, Display, and Educational Bookets.
We absolutely loved this kit! As part of our homeschool geology lessons we cracked open geodes as a fun activity. The kids had a blast. The geode quality was quite high. The kit even includes two pairs of safety goggles and two display stands. The kit also includes a booklet that teaches about geodes. Then there is a separate activity book that reinforces the content learned. I wish there was more there, but at the same time the content that is included is very professional and very well done. I am extremely happy with our purchase and highly recommend this kit

Hands on Learning
The safety glasses that come in this set are EXCELLENT--the best quality I've experienced in a child's science kit. Often, they don't fit adults or are stiff and uncomfortable to wear. The literature was brief but informative. The ten activities (maze, word puzzles, connect the dots, etc.) were best suited for younger children (my daughter is 13--recommended age goes up to 15). The seven geodes are a generous amount, though one was quite small. It was too hard for us to open (along with one other geode). Our kit included three types of geodes: calcite, "rock crystal" quartz and the drusy quartz. I appreciated the explanation of various methods to crack them open. My daughter managed to cleanly split two by using the back of our hammer. For displaying the geodes, there's a thin paperboard background with a miner in a brown mineshaft (it's different than the bluish cave design on the product page). Hopefully, this can be updated. There are also two black plastic stands for showcasing these stunning geodes (the Ultimate Kit contains three). Note: Choose your working space wisely! I recommend cracking these outside in the grass, if possible. I had some thick cardboard that I merely placed over the wooden floor (we live in an apartment with no balcony). Our excitement was tempered by the dents we accidentally made to the wooden flooring from striking the rocks. We were initially unaware since the cardboard bottom was still intact--it happened without breaking through to the other side. *Complimentary geode set provided for testing and review purposes.

Geode Party!
Bought 3 boxes for the classroom. My Kindergarten students LOVED this. Everyone is loving geology right now and almost everyone is planning on becoming a Geologist when they grow up. ***One of 7 of the geodes didn't have crystals inside, it was just a rock, so 3 in my case. It added to our conversation about how that's part of excavating. I've added a photo collage to show the nice range in geodes we got. Some opened in one smash and others took up to 10 minutes. Reading reviews, some people suggest going at them carefully, we tried that but it was taking a long, long time. Great if you have a whole lot of time. We used hammers, with the geodes on trays, outside on cement for a strong impact. Made for an amazing Geode Party! Great buy, would purchase again.

Very cool activity!
Very cool kit! I found this on a whim searching Amazon for xmas gift ideas. So far the 8-9 year old kids love it. The can't wait to see what kind of crystals are inside. The sock method and chisel method didn't really work for us. We wedged ours in the groove of the sidewalk and let the kids have at it with a hammer. It's easier wedging it then having to hold it with your hand. They love it. We were hoping for a bit more variety with what was inside the rocks - out of 7 or 8 geodes (i think), we've only seen 2 different types of crystals inside. But still very cool and nice to have a informational/activity booklet as well, so that it is a learning experience also.

My 10yr. old son had a blast cracking these ope. We were able to get them all open by just placing each one in a sock and then using a hammer. he was not able to crack open some of them so I had to do it, but he was still able to open 3 on his ow, we received a couple of really nice quart, 3 I believe but all different, a black stone with huge white crystals inside, and a smaller stone that was blue on the inside and it is just beautiful! Very pleased with this purchase, my son enjoyed learning about geodes and might order more in the future!!

My son had a blast with these. He used a hammer and it took him a while to smash some of them open, although some were easier. I wish there were more vibrant ones and some amethyst as they're all pretty similar and dull but still beautiful. Fun way to explore and learn about geodes.

This was so much fun. Of course the first geode we decided to crack open was next to IMPOSSIBLE which had me super worried that they were all going to be like, titanium, but they really weren't. (Not that it could be helped even if they were! They're real geodes after all.) Once we got the hang of it there was really nothing to it. They broke open nice and clean for the most part (I got a little overzealous with the hammer on one poor geode. RIP) and the crystals inside were beautiful. My son was slightly bummed that they were all white inside and not varied, but I explained to him that there's obviously no way to know, unless you're superman and can see through the rock with your x-ray vision. His geodes are now proudly on display in his bedroom. It was such a good gift!

My son and I like rocks, so while it was fun to make Dad crack them open, they were nowhere as nice inside as the mystery geode we bought at the rock show. They weren't especially round or uniformly solid so cracking them into pretty pieces was a little awkward. One of them was a purple druzy, so that was pretty nice.

3 of the geodes seem impossible to crack open (tried a hammer, and a hammer and chisel on concrete floor). The ones that did are the same, and one shattered completely apart with a very light tap from a hammer (in a cloth on table). The ones that did open were the same type of crystal.
