Learn English With Cartoons: A Fun Vocabulary Builder Workbook

I have used this book and it makes learning English fun for children. I absolutely love this book, it exceeded my expectations. As all the other Lingo Mastery books, this book Awesomely Amazing, fun and Educational. Thank you Lingo Mastery for creating such Easy to use and Engaging books!!

I tried this out with a friend who has a mother who is an elderly Russian immigrant and is struggling to learn English. Perhaps it is because of her age, but this book has not seemed to help her. Perhaps this book is for people who already have more proficiency with English.

I recommend this product for homeschool and speech therapists. This really gives autistic children a good word / visual connection and helps greatly to bridge the gap of comprehension. Takes a lot of stress off of kids when learning new concepts of communication.

The cartoons are all the same. How are you supposed to get context out of a cartoon with no details? For instance there is a girl in a car asking for directions on a straight street and even though the directions change, the image stays the same. Another example has two children discussing what you can do in different types of buildings...can I get my hair cut here? And the building says dentist. Why isn't it also obviously a dentist office? There are no context clues to make the cartoon necessary. Then new vocabulary is introduced with sentences, why not images? Skates: You need skates to play hockey. Why not just put a picture of skates? Then the cartoon that follows has hockey sticks, but no skates. Missed opportunity.

I have read other Lingo Mastery books, which for me had been German to help me recall some of the stuff I had learned in college, where the language had been my minor, while Sociology was my major. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, and this books how true that saying is. There is no way an individual can visualize what a particular item is by just hearing a verbal description of it. THINK ABOUT THIS EXAMPLE: As you describe what a cat is, try to visualize what you are saying physically. It’s not easy, is it? The teaching of English to immigrants via pictures or cartoon drawings is not new. I vaguely recall as a child finding a book my parents, who came from Europe in the 1950s, had been given shortly after they had arrived. Growing up as a child, I learned English and the language my parents spoke at home, so making the connection came easy. When I hear my parent’s language today, there is an instantaneous translation that occurs to English. In junior high school and high school, I studied French, and each time we got taught something, a visual presentation of that subject solidified the object in my mind. Given the book’s publisher wanting to help immigrants learn English as their second [or third] language, they need to be applause, which is why I’ve given the publisher 5 STARS for their endeavor here. I received a PDF.file copy of this book from the publisher through a giveaway they had on LibraryThing, and the above has been my honest opinion.

Great addition to use in ESL classes

However, it may seem that only children can learn a new language and by the time you are an adult it is simply too late. That is not the case….Being bilingual is an ability that will provide you with more employment opportunities in your career. Needless to say, right now would be a great time to gain one of the more important talents to e successful – learning English…In this book you will learn about daily activities as well as common topic conversations…Each chapter is divided into vocabulary with a pronunciation key to help you learn hw to accurately pronounce each vocabulary word that is new to you…The next section of the chapter is set aside for the grammatical skills that apply to both the theme of the chapter and the writing and reading skills…Lastly, the chapter contains activities that include the vocabulary in addition to the grammar, reading and writing skills that you learned in that chapter…this book includes tips, images and explanations so that you can learn each part needed before moving on to the more challenging skills. After their success teaching Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian, and Chinese, Korean, Dutch, Portuguese, Turkish, Japanese, and now they address those who want to learn English! And it works. Each of the chapters follows the pattern – vocabulary (key words and sentences), Grammar, and a cartoon telling a story using the words newly learned, then a cartoon ‘completion’ section, making the process visual for retaining the vocabulary presented. The topics of the chapters include asking for directions and information, parts of the body, school and work, likes and dislikes, houses, family relationships, jobs, sports, hobbies, holidays and travel, manners, and many more. The ‘difficulty of vocabulary increases as the book progresses – with a test at the end! The technique is solid and the stories are entertaining. This is a very fine introduction to English vocabulary that encourages learning English as a second language. This is a refreshing addition to the Lingo Mastery library of language books! Trust the 1-star reviews - they are spot on! This book is a big disappointment and quite misleading in its title. Few "cartoons" and what cartoons are in the book are printed in rather light, black and white ink making it difficult to use for distance learning. Mostly just boring, repetitive grammar exercises that are just as dry as any other workbook. Nothing new or innovative for teaching English. Don't waste your money or time on this book!

Cute but not very much substance.

L'idée est bonne, l'explication de la structure des phrases par le biais de schémas facilite bien la compréhension et permet de guider la production écrite. Je trouve cependant les illustrations très répétitives et c'est dommage. Les exercices sont très didactisés mais bon pourquoi pas...

Die Cartoons helfen Anfängern die Worte zu verstehen, nicht zu schwer, auch für "Normalbegabte". Musste unerwartet viel probieren und habe Vermögen ausgegeben. Habe mit zu schwerem Material vermeidbare Unlust erzueugt. Das würde ich wieder kaufen.
