This watch does have a Japanese movement. If the watch is shipped and sold by Amazon, then it is authentic.

what do you mean by it dies out overnight? does it run on battery, solar power, or does it run on another form of power?

It's an automatic watch, so it runs off of movement from wearing it. It has a built-in pendulum that moves back & forth when you move & that's how it keeps wound. If you don't wear it, it will die, but all you have to do is wind it. I love automatic watches, no batteries just movement, plus this watch being skeletonized you can see the mechanics of the watch & can actually see the spring inside & see when it's almost about to die, all in a I absolutely love this watch & that's why I bought the rectangular version of this watch as well.

Does the second hand tick or is it a smooth motion?

This style is a sweep second and will have 4 ticks per second. It will not tick every second but will not be completely smooth either.
