Hat is described as a plaid patch. I can not detect a plaid per se. Is it solid black or not?

It is a plaid design. I bought the grey one as the pattern is more visible. The grey also matches a more varied color pallete from browns, grays, blacks, and blues etc...

What are dimensions of brim and crown? only like 2 1/2 inch bills and 5 inch crowns.

Well the bill is 2 1/2" and if I'm correct on what you mean about the crown, it's 4 1/4" top to bottom. Hope that helps.

It is really light. Doesn’t even weigh a lb
