Would engraving the compass cause the back coating to flake?

I believe it would cause it to flake.

Yes, the are functional. We used them for hiking.

What size are the boxes?

I don't remember size completely but 1/3 larger than the compasses? Large enough to hold 2 Lindt chocolates

Not sure what you meant by accurate. If you mean do they work accurately? I cannot answer this as we used these as table decorations for a theme wedding and they were beautiful.
