a neat little book that is perfect for those learning Swedish. these short stories give you practise to learn in a nice easy format.

It is a book for more advanced speakers than you would think. the stories aren't translated, only some vocabulary and a short story, so something to keep in mind before purchasing

I can read some basic Swedish novels (detective fiction) slowly. They're good, but they are harder to find in the US and it's tiresome to look up so many words. These stories allowed me to read more fluidly and therefore grasp the meanings of certain new words from the context alone or by using the glossary after each story. Actually, they were more like vignettes of real Swedish life than artistic fiction--though they were not without artistic merit either. For the most part, each story was too short to 'go anywhere deep', but I wanted them to. They drew me in easily. It's of course fine that they stopped short, as the point was to deliver a succinct language lesson in its cultural context. I really appreciate this book and I hope to see more like it.

Compared to other collections out there, this one is definitely one of the better ones. Whoever wrote it (there are no credits) very successfully created stories that not only are quite moving because of their realness, but they also contain a wealth of useful vocabulary while still pushing a lot of cultural buttons along the way. Other collections have stories filled with forgettable cardboard characters and situations. Not so here and more than a few might even get you to shed a tear or two. Not for the rank beginner. More low to high intermediate. The only downside is the so-called accompanying audio which seems to be only offered with an Amazon subscription. Shame on them. It should be made available once you’ve purchased the book which is not exactly the cheapest. But overall good job.

I found this book just right for practicing Swedish. I'm pretty fluent, but it was 40 years ago since I spoke it regularly. I knew most words, but there were a few new ones, plus some useful clarifications, translations, and phrasing. The short stories made it easy to tackle the book in my spare time. I will say that it's best to not have any other language playing in the background as you read. Also, read it out loud to practice pronunciation. Having an audible component would be a great addition to the book.

Much better than I expected. It's written using common words, yet the stories are quite enjoyable to read. Though don't expect too much regarding the storytelling, they are only short stories after all. VEERY well suited for picking up a bunch of new+common words while giving yourself some sweet immersion, and therefore comprehensible Input which is the essence of language acquisition. Highly recommend this, once you have learnt your basic swedish grammar and vocab from Teach yourself swedish or any other Textbook.
