As you have probably seen, there is a slew of very inexpensive Infrared Thermometers available. To me, that means thermometers in the approximately $20 price range. If you don't need extreme accuracy or resolution, there is nothing wrong with those. I use mine to verify the temperature of my Painted Agama lizards, so I need good resolution and accuracy. The Klein IR5 is pretty equivalent to the Fluke 62 which is $95. Some reviewers actually like the Klein better than the Fluke. I cannot say since I don't own both. I like that the Klein IR5 is made in the US (Lincolnshire, IL). It has a solid, heavy feel in the hand which I like. It comes with a pistol-shaped protective pouch that holds it quite well. I like that it uses dual laser aiming so that you can see the exact circle of area being measured. If you like quality and are willing to spend about twice as much as the low-quality thermometers, then you will not be disappointed in the Klein IR5.

I like this dual laser digital thermometer. It fits my usage intent better than the single laser digital thermometers.I.E. I want to know the average temp of the entire cooking surface before I dump my ingredients upon it. I want to know the average temp of the entire cat heating pads for all of my many outside cats, without having to bend over to check them all by hand.This unit gives me a better idea of the temp of an entire thing than just one small point on it. Works great and pretty accurate.

I’ve been occasionally using this work to check surface temps on some of our equipment.The material and build is solid. The device is definitely geared toward a more rugged industrial environment.Once you learn the three button panel, making settings adjustments is simple. You can also turn the lasers and backlight on or off, as preferred.Very IMPORTANT- You MUST adjust the emissivity correctly in the settings to receive accurate temps. The instructions do have a short list of emissivity values, but you’ll have to look online for a more comprehensive list.My one concern is the battery life. After the initial 20 minutes of learning and testing, I stored the device in its protective case. The next time I attempted to use it, the 9V battery was dead. It’s possible that the stock battery was crap, but I can’t be sure. There is no on/off feature. The device automatically shuts off after about 15 seconds idle time. I Installed a new battery, which seems to be working fine for now.I’m undecided whether the price paid was worthwhile. There are other similar brands/models that are less expensive. Hopefully the brand lives up to its name.

I always thought these were way more expensive. Then I needed to know if a wet patch of drywall was active or dry, and I know using one of these is a way to figure that out. This was very easy to use. It was fun learning about how different sections of my condo are a couple degrees warmer or cooler depending on external -vs- internal walls, proximity to AC supply vents, return vents, etc. Never knew the surface of a car was so hot - e.g. the actual temperature.

I am glad I chose the dual laser (more expensive) version of this infrared thermometer. Although most uses do not require its increased accuracy, the process of identifying thermal issues (with energy loses in home/home insulation) is greatly enhanced. I will also be using in various automotive applications. Thank you Klein Tools; great product at a very good price.
