The Fitting Book: Make Sewing Pattern Alterations & Achieve the Perfect Fit You Desire

I thought this was mainly a reference book; that I would just look for my fitting issue and learn what to do. But it is much more than that! It is more like a course in fitting—starting with your fitting sample (aka muslin or toile). Excellent, excellent book. Some reviewers point out that the book starts with a moulage and that you need to take that course before the book is useful. This is a misunderstanding. This book assumes that you have made up a sample from a pattern. You then use this book to evaluate the fit and make the pattern adjustments needed. She does explain the process of pattern development which starts with a moulage, then to a sloper, then to a pattern; but this book is used once the pattern is made and a fitting sample made from it. So. If you have purchased a pattern, you have made a sample, it doesn’t fit just as you had hoped, this is the book for you.

This book is chalked full of information. Information is what I need, instead of frufru pictures that’s just taking up space for valuable information. The diagrams are simple, easy to read, so that you can confidently apply your corrections, to the patterns. If you are looking for a coffee table book, this ain’t it. If you’re the type that just want to cut to chase, get ready to work. I am certain those who left 1-3 stars, only thumbed through the book, and got flustered by the volume of information and basic shapes. I’d advise you, if you’re feeling this way, take in small chunks, bit by bit, and you will feel happy that you selected this book. Again, it’s not a luxurious, Disney, thumb through type of book, it’s a guide which will remain by your side. Happy Sewing.

I purchased this book several years ago and have used it for a reference book and it is an excellent resource. A short while ago the author, Gina Renee, suggested reading the book from cover to cover and she would answer any questions we had and offer her insights. Unheard of right? Well reading the book from start to finish has been an eye opener. I didn’t realize how much I had missed! As Gina says, you have to know the rules before you can break them. As a self taught sewer my confidence level has improved greatly since reading the book and hearing her insights. I highly recommend this book!

This book is so clear and concise when it comes to fitting sewing patterns. I feel I could have saved a lot of fabric, time and sanity had I gotten it sooner. It’s so empowering to be able to sew clothing that fits!

I have a number of fitting books and this is at the top of my list. This is an excellent book. I took a class where the teacher wanted me to add a dart where my muslin was cut too large. This book will tell you how to recut your muslin to get rid of the extra fabric.

Be prepared to use along with the QR codes on each page. Each page is a summary of the directions. You really need to watch the videos to get the full directions. Having the book is a great! It’s like having class notes. The notes help me remember video contents. No more watching videos over and over. I’m not new to sewing, but I’m new to doing more than basic alterations. This will definitely be one of my “go to” books.
