what is the difference between the rubbing compound and polishing compound?

Polishing compound is a finer abrasive than rubbing compound. I once called Turtle Wax customer service about the abrasive. They said that rubbing compound is about the same as 600 grit. I didn't ask about polishing compound but I'd assume that it might be equal to 1000 grit.

Can anyone tell me what color this rubbing compound is? I have a container but its a couple years old and its a dark orange/rust color.

RUBBING compound is rust-colored, POLISHING compound is white. Your dark orange/rust colored stuff is RUBBING compound and it has not gone "bad" the way a two-year-old sandwich would go bad.

Can this product be used on a fiberglass gel coat RV to remove oxidation?

This product not only did not work but made the problem worse. Actually scratched the spot and made it dull. I would NOT recommend
