Endless rooms to dream in and have nightmares!
It isn't every book of 580 pages where nothing ever starts to drag! And it is hard for any author to sustain my attention this long! It is very easy for my mind to wander as I explore the contents of most books, but this never happens in ROOM TO DREAM. Everything in here is intriguing! Everything in here kept my interest, page after page! I have to say the person I grew up to be was strongly influenced by television and the movies, not always constructively. I had countless fictitious role models to choose from. Then came along BLUE VELVET and the character Jeffrey Beaumont, played by Kyle MacLachlan. I have to say the photo of young David Lynch on the next to last page of ROOM TO DREAM resembles Mr. MacLachlan. This is obviously no accident. I cannot say I resemble Kyle, but I can say I am on the skinny side and not imposing looking, not the type of person people would find likely to be able to push anybody around or play detective. I do not think anybody would find in Jeffrey Beaumont an imposing figure but what he lacks in physical presence is made up for by his persistence as an amateur investigator willing to go to extreme ends to a solve a strange and enigmatic mystery and forcing Detective Williams (Sandy Williams's father) in the local police department to take him seriously. Largely through the inspiration this movie provided through the role model of Jeffrey Beaumont, years after this movie was released, I relaunched an investigation into a very cold murder case from 1938 involving two Berkeley CA women brutally tortured and murdered in the west Texas desert originally outlined in the late Clint Richmond's wonderful book, FETCH THE DEVIL. Immediately, I gained the interest of a retired FBI agent (and his wife) and he in turn convinced a professor of intelligence and security studies to join in our efforts. We have also been aided by a friend of mine who is an Internet whiz. I pursued all of this because the case just BEGGED for resolution and had a gross injustice in need of much greater attention. Our investigation into this complex case has gone on for years and is partially solved but still manages to remain endlessly enigmatic. To pursue just such a type of case is what the character of Jeffrey Beaumont was doing as he explored the goings on with the many bizarre figures encountered in BLUE VELVET, including perhaps the evilest man imaginable, Frank Booth. And of course, all of this originated in the creative and diabolical mind of David Lynch whose efforts on the set and behind the scenes of BLUE VELVET and all of his other classic movies he produced (which I also adore) are clearly and entertainingly outlined in ROOM TO DREAM. Never a dull moment in this book nor apparently in the workings of David Lynch's mind which offered unlimited avenues of creative genius! From the number of readers who rated ROOM TO DREAM with five stars, it is obvious almost everyone agrees on what an exceptional man David Lynch was! He was also a little weird, something people consider me to be also! Highly recommended!
