Works like a charm
It looks so scary and I was apprehensive about it at first, but after doing lots of research and trying it myself, it worked wonders on our German Shepherd Dog. Even using the dead ring (leash connected to both big rings at the same time, which is how you should start), it works perfectly and the prongs are rounded and safe, so they're not going to pierce anything or break the skin. It's SOOO much better and safer than when our dog was literally choking and gagging himself by pulling with all his (considerable) strength against his neck with a normal collar or slip collar and likely damaging his throat. He stopped pulling immediately, so the prongs became immediately irrelevant, anyway. Now he walks down the street like an angel and I get endless comments about what a great dog he is. It's also great for training around the house to not chew on or get into things he shouldn't. Be sure to research the proper way to fit a prong collar before using. There are sites and videos available that instruct you on this. It doesn't really come with any real instructions. A lot of people try to put it over a dog's head like a slip chain collar and that's totally wrong and causes it to hang loosely down by the shoulders. You have to disconnect a link (by squeezing) and put it on that way. Also, when you first get this, be sure to remove enough links to you get a snug fit so it stays high on the neck and not down by the shoulders. Other advice: if you have a dangerously aggressive dog, you should use a backup leash/collar just in case the prong collar ever gets disconnected somehow. It's more likely with the quick-release type prong collars which I wouldn't recommend for a really vicious dog. Edit: Forgot to mention that I received several recommendations for this particular brand of prong collar and I'm very happy with it. It is well made and solid and good for a fairly large dog. Very heavy gauge wire that's smooth and rounded tips, so it's definitely not going to hurt your dog or break the skin. Also, you can gradually wean your dog off the prong collar after it gets into the habit of walking properly by simply switching the leash between the prong collar and his normal collar. The normal collar is always on to hold any tags and so forth. If he starts pulling, it's very easy to switch back. You don't want to teach your dog that it's ok to pull with a normal collar. Once you have your dog properly retrained, you shouldn't really need the prong collar any more in most cases.

Two wordsโฆGAME CHANGER!!!
I canโt recommend this collar enough! I have a 50โpound hound/shepherd mix who used to pull like crazy, and I was honestly at my witโs end. After some research, I tried the Herm Sprenger Chrome Plated Training Collar with Quick Release Snap (โHerm Sprenger Pet Supply Imports Chrome Plated Training Collar with Quick Release Snap for Dogs, Medium, 3.0mm, 21โInchโ), and it completely changed our walks. I was nervous at first because prong collars sounded harsh, but once I learned how to fit and use it correctly, I realized itโs very humane. It applies even pressure around the neckโno choking, no painโjust calm, clear communication my dog instantly understood. Within a few walks, the difference was night and day. My dog went from dragging me down the street and pulling my arm โout of its socketโ to walking nicely by my side. The German quality is outstandingโstrong, goodโlooking, and so far, rustโfree. I love the quickโrelease feature for how easy it is to snap on or off (you MUST get this feature!), and adjusting the size is simple by adding or removing links. If your dogโs a puller, do yourself a favor and give this collar a try. Watch a quick tutorial online to learn proper use, and youโll be amazed at how much calmer and more enjoyable your walks become. Itโs truly an incredible valueโyouโll look back and be so glad you made this purchase. A final note: I am not getting paid for this review; I just felt that I needed to write about this game changer!

A great, effective, and HUMANE tool for training dogs that pull!
I love this collar, and my dog does too! We recently adopted a lab mix from a local shelter that was immensely over-crowded. She is a wonderful dog, but she was the WORST puller I have ever had the displeasure to walk! It got to the point where I caught myself not wanting to exercise her because it was so exhausting. My mother bought her a traditional choke collar (like this one Guardian Gear Choke Chain Dog Collar Med. Wt. 2.5mm 18 ), which only lead to her pulling harder and now CHOKING herself! Curious to test the collar, I put it around my upper arm and pulled really hard. The supposedly "humane" choke collar gave me a bruise and a sore arm for four days! THEN we tried a "Gentle Leader."( Gentle Leader Quick Release Head Collar, Medium, Royal Blue ) Do not be deceived by the name of this product. My dog HATED it. It would force her head to whip around in an unnatural way, and I became fearful of doing neck/spinal damage to my dog. Not only that, but because she pulled so hard, it would become ridiculously tight around her face, start cutting into her muzzle, and restrict panting (which any veterinarian will tell you is incredibly dangerous, especially in summer). Some people suggested a harness, but there was no way I was giving my already strong dog a way to drag me down the street! I would essentially be making her into an amateur sled dog, except I would be the sled. NO THANKS. I was at my wits' end. I have a few friends who are excellent dog trainers (one of whom owns a dog with several obedience titles) and I'd seen them all use prong collars. One of my friends pointed me to Herm Sprenger for their high quality collars (with beveled prong tips) and I COULDN'T be happier. I admit, I was a little hesitant because of the way the collars look, but let me tell you, they are FAR more comfortable for your dog. I did the same test I did with the choke collar, and there was no bruise, no pain, only a slight pressure around my arm. As far as the collar in action, it was like walking a whole new dog! BOTH my dog and I enjoyed our walk, and there was no pulling at all. People who say these collars are barbaric have clearly not done their research. I chose the appropriate collar for my dog's size and weight, fitted it properly (snug but not tight), put it on in the right place(high on the neck, just below the ears), and learned the difference between the "live" and "dead" rings. It doesn't put direct pressure on your dog's windpipe/trachea and is therefore a hundred times more comfortable. This prong collar works wonders. My dog and I are thrilled, and it's safe to say, there are many more walks in our future thanks to this collar.

Effective Training Tool for Discerning Dog Owners!
As a responsible dog owner committed to positive reinforcement training, I initially had reservations about using a pinch collar. However, after extensive research and consultation with professional trainers, I decided to try the Herm Sprenger Pinch Dog Training Collar with Quick Release Snap, and I'm incredibly impressed with the results. Firstly, the construction of this collar is exceptional. Made by Herm Sprenger, a renowned name in the industry, the quality is evident from the moment you hold it. The stainless steel material is durable and rust-resistant, ensuring longevity even with daily use. The design of the pinch collar is humane and effective. Contrary to misconceptions, when used correctly, it provides gentle yet firm feedback to discourage pulling and promote better leash manners. The evenly distributed pressure mimics the natural correction a dog would receive from its mother or pack leader, making it a valuable training aid. One of the standout features of this collar is the quick-release snap. It allows for easy on and off, ensuring a secure fit without the hassle of struggling with traditional buckle closures. This is especially convenient during training sessions or when transitioning between walks and off-leash play. I appreciate the versatility of the collar, as it can be adjusted to fit various neck sizes comfortably. Additionally, the 2.25mm thickness and 12" length make it suitable for medium to large breeds, providing ample control without being overly restrictive. While I understand that pinch collars may not be suitable for every dog or training scenario, for those who have tried other methods without success, the Herm Sprenger Pinch Dog Training Collar offers a viable solution. When used responsibly and in conjunction with positive reinforcement techniques, it can be an invaluable tool for fostering obedience and safety. In conclusion, I highly recommend the Herm Sprenger Pinch Dog Training Collar to discerning dog owners who prioritize effective, humane training methods. It's a well-crafted, reliable tool that has made a noticeable difference in my dog's behavior, and I'm confident it will do the same for others.

Great collar but have a back up!
This is the 2nd Herm Sprenger collar I have purchased and it works great! On a regular collar, our 45lb dog pulls and is a terrible walker, but with this collar she walks calmly beside me. The only issue I have had is the quick release spring fails after about 18 months and will no longer close-twice the collar has fallen off my dog and I live in a city so can no longer use it. This has happened twice so hopefully the company will fix this issue going forward.

Great collar
We use this with our 1yo 80+ lb female German Shepard, and it works like a dream. I used to be one of those people who thought collars like this are cruel, but honestly, I was simply uneducated. (I also used to think it was cute to feed a dog from the table, let them jump up when they wanted, let them sleep on whatever furniture they wanted, would never think of crating a dog, establishing rules, etc. In other words, I was an idiot. But I digress...) So we (and Azula) were professionally trained by a reputable school in the area, and we all got through it with pretty good marks. It was 4-5 weeks long, and during that time, the trainers introduced us to this collar. We kept using it they way they showed us, and it's been great. And really, I promise you, it is not cruel to use this collar! In fact, I think it's the opposite, and actually reduces the chance of a dog seriously hurting itself from pulling too hard when on a lead. Case in point, we somehow lost our first prong collar (hence, the purchase of this new one); in the interim, I had Azula's lead attached to her regular canvas collar. Although she's trained, she is still a puppy, and she definitely gets excited when we go for walks in strange places and other dogs are around. She scared the bejeezes out of me several times when she launched herself against the lead, because she almost crushed her windpipe in the process. The noises she was making out of her moth afterward were heart wrenching. Of course, she didn't understand that she was contributing to her own problem, and it happened several more times. Has this *ever* happened with the pronged collar? No. Why? Because the prong collar makes it uncomfortable to pull without doing any damage, so she stops pulling much sooner - long before there's danger of real injury. She also has a nice thick coat, and the prongs don't usually even make it to her skin (yes, we check and adjust the collar regularly). But even if the prongs do get to the skin on her neck, I'll take that over a crushed windpip any day. I'm betting she'd agree with me. We have a great dog, and we love her dearly. She's happy and healthy, and has no problem wearing this collar - when it's time for a walk, she sits right down, tail thumping like crazy, waiting for us to put it on with her leash (obviously, this collar only goes on with a leash - you don't leave it on all the time). The collar has been an excellent training aid, and I firmly believe it has prevented injury on our highly energetic pup. There is a right way and a wrong way to use this collar, so I do strongly recommend this: LEARN HOW TO USE THIS COLLAR PROPERLY FROM A GOOD TRAINER BEFORE YOU START USING IT WITH YOUR DOG. E.g, you're not supposed to pull long and hard on the lead - it should never be a battle of strength! The proper technique is to give the collar a quick shake and then release pressure. Repeat if necessary. What this does is gets your dog's attention back on you, and away from the dog/squirrel/child/water buffalo she (or he) was trying to make a break for. Never pull long and hard on the lead with this collar on your dog. If your dog is that crazy, then make him (or her) sit or lie down until they calm down, and then try again. If it persists, go back inside so they realize that sort of behavior does not get them outside more often. Wait a while and try again. Be patient. Put in the time. It's amazing what your dog will learn if you put in the investment.

For our very stubborn Anatolian Shepherd/Great Dane rescue
We rescued Maus August 2014 from our local Humane Society. I had gone to find a large breed puppy. Came home with a three-year-old AMAZING dog that has some issues due to previous owner neglect/abuse. She's been more than worth it though. At 117lbs, she can be quite the handful, and walking was a chore, sometimes painfully so. Tried several types of collars, both gentle leader style (they won't stay on her head), etc etc. She needs both a harness and a collar as she can twist out of most anything when she perceives a threat. As in dogs growling barking and charging at us, whether behind a fence or due to them running loose. The one con I have is it should include directions. I couldn't figure out how to use it and thought it was broken. Luckily I have a German (figured relevant since the product is German) boyfriend to show me (but it took him a moment as well). The chain piece that at first I thought was broken turns out to be what you thread through a small hole, then attach with the very easy to use clasp. Wow, what a difference. I'd been using a different style of prong collar, where you have to pinch together the long prongs to make them fit into another one. I have some arthritis issues and some days it was almost impossible with a very excited dog who was more than ready to go. While she sits for collar/harness attaching, she's not good at sitting for lengthy times of owner ineptitude while gearing up. I can slide this collar over her head and it sits high on her neck for the maximum 'hey, let's not eat the annoying small yappy dog that is charging at us' effect. A quick correct is all it takes, along with a 'no pulling' or 'leave it' and she's been so much easier to walk and enjoy. The shorter prongs work much better with her short fur, no more painful corrections. Our daily 'drag and sniff' sessions are now much easier for all of us. As we also have a 40lb Australian Kelpie/Whippet mix rescue (who needs no prong), this means both dogs can walk, sniff, trot and enjoy being outdoors without me having to constantly being cranky at being jerked, yanked and pulled (sometimes all the way to the ground, not fun but sometimes funny, I have to admit) and the continual orders every few seconds. Taking it off is a breeze, just unclasp and off it goes, no pain for me nor for Maus as I don't have to grab and force prongs apart while having the collar too tight for that moment of sometimes more than a few seconds like with pinch together prong styles. This is the first dog I've ever needed to 'prong', (had a 140lb Rottie, and a 60lb Akita mix before this new batch of dogs), and I have to admit it's made a difference for the better. When you have a dog who can put their head on the dining table w/o lifting their chin, who's never been trained properly and is very stubborn, you have to find ways to keep them from taking over in every aspect while being firm but gentle. Not only are we happier, she's MUCH happier and we are enjoying longer walks as a result!

Highly recommended!
With the right technique, the prong can be an extremely valuable tool in setting a strong foundation of trust and leash manners with your dog. Coming back to the quality, Herm Sprenger is probably one of the best bets when it comes to safety as well as make. There are many cheap Chinese models and knockoffs of the same, please stay away from them!
