Will this power 2.5" SATA drives via USB only and not require the power supply?

I am wondering the same question, but I would find it strange that the power supply would be needed for a 2.5" drive. 2.5" (laptop) drives run at 5V (same as USB). The power supply is a 12V power supply (which is what all 3.5" drives need: 12V power, thus they aren't able to be powered by USB). Every other adapter like this I have seen and used did NOT require the power supply for 2.5" drives. So, it is possible the power is needed, but it seems strange to me that it would be required.

does it work with External hard drives

if you pull the external hard drive from its case it will work unless the internal hard drive uses an older PATA (EIDE) connector instead of SATA, anything from 2006 and above should have an SATA connector generally speaking.

Does this device support reporting of smart disk performance information back to the host?

Can i use this to connect an external drive to a home network drive? i have google wifi so i can't connect directly to the router.

You can connect to anything that will accept a USB 3.0 or USB 2 external hard drive. You will have to check the information that came with your home network drive to determine whether or not that home network drive is compatible with an external USB drive.
