The Annotated Phantom Tollbooth

I feel the same way about this book as the Harry Potter generation feels about Rowling’s work: it is defining. It was the first “big boy/girl” book I remember reading. Having often felt directionless and unchallenged in school like Milo, it helped tremendously to see that an adult like Juster could understand that. It made it easier to approach my teachers and my education in a way that resulted in much greater happiness at school. Though I’m certain that Rhyme and Reason have been exiled even further than the Castle in the Air this time, re-reading the book as an adult has proven to be somewhat of a salve for the depressing willful, gleeful ignorance on display all around.Brevity being the soul of wit, as we’re reminded, I’ll just plug one more awesome feature of this edition: the commentary. I read the notes alongside the book this time (rather than separately or after each chapter). Hugely illuminating of the writing and publishing process. Wonderful bios of Juster and Ffeiffer.

LOved this book dearly - from childhood to adulthood. This is special and will be super interesting for adult fans, who want to know more about how the book came together. The notes really irritate my child though.

The annotated version is such a great resource and unique window into the mind of Norton Juster. With the many word plays and older sayings so creatively employed in this masterpiece, the extra notes are a valuable teaching tool to help readers to unlock many levels of meanings.

One of THE best children's books ever! I read and enjoyed this story as a child, then as a mom; to my children, and most recently to my grand-daughter. Purchased this edition as a gift for my (now grown,) son as it became one of his thoroughly enjoyed, fondly thought of, childhood favorites as well. Very pleased with it! Didn't want to thumb through it too much before giving, but took a few glances inside and it looked nicely done. Highly recommend as a gift.

This book is one of my favorites, so I have no complaints about the content. It is going to be a Christmas present, so I pre-ordered it to have it sooner rather than later, and when I opened the box, I saw that the paper cover was ripped three times, which I assume happened during the shipping process. I don't think it's worth the hassle of returning it, but I really wish the book had been protected better. Part of the problem was that it came in a box way too big for it, so it had room to move around and there was nowhere near enough padding inside of the box itself. I am quite disappointed.

The best book ever!!! The annotated edition is even better because it is jam packed with lots of great information. This is a must have for every Phantom Tollbooth fan.

One of my favorite books as a kid. I hope my grandsons like it as much! It's a wonderful fantasy adventure with lots of laugh-out-loud funny moments and plays on words. Get in your pedal car and drive through that mysterious toll booth, there's fun waiting for you on the other side.

We did not know this story before so first of all read the book. We then could go back and find out a lot more about the writer and all the different aspects of the story in this lovely hard-back edition. A must for fans of the book.

Bought this as a christening present for my nephew but sadly it is not a children's book, being more for a fan of The Phantom Tollbooth. It has the whole story, illustrations and background info.Oh we'll, I will just have to keep it myself!

This is a classic for both intelligent children and adults with a sense of humour and an interest in language.
