HP DL380 G9 Server / 2X E5-2670 V3 2.3GHz = 24 Cores / 128GB RAM / P840 / 12x 3TB SAS (Renewed)

Server came well packaged with dense foam and had two included power cables for the redundant PSU's. I admittedly was very nervous about having a server shipped with the drives installed as they would be subject to every impact the server received but so far no drive failures. There were not (12) 3TB Drives in the server as stated but instead there were (9) 4TB drives so it equals out in terms of storage space. From what I can tell most of the drives have about 1 year of usage on them according to SMART. Since only 9 of the 12 bays have drives in them the 3 empty caddys are actually blanks so you'll need to buy the appropriate caddys if you wish to expand into the last 3 bays. The server did come with a BCDVideo 15gb USB Flash drive connected to the motherboard which leads me to believe these are refurbed BCDVideo servers which is perfectly okay with me. For the price, this is an insane deal for your homelab and is a great starter but beware of possibly expensive and complicated hardware if anything fails on these aging beauties. If you pick this up, I recommend taking some time to go through all of the bios functions, the iLo and HP Smart provisioning to learn the capabilities of the server. You can also find iLo 4 advanced keys online for free to unlock all of the iLo functions. 10/10 would buy again.

Server functions though the "Smart memory" feature wont work as there has been a non-certified HP Memory DIMM installed in it there for iLo reports this on post. Seller says to live with it. - 5/11/2026 - Vendor supplied the HP certified memory to us and every thing is excellent now so I revised my review from 2 start to 5 star because good customer service is hard to come by these days.

Problems - P840 card had two loose SAS connections, so that only 4 of 12 drives were connected. Fixed by re-connecting SAS at card. - Processor package heatsink was not fully tightened? So thermal paste was thick and not spread out, at the lowest power setting (1.2 GHz) temperatures were high (70 C). Bonus - 3 TiB drives were actually 4 TiB drives! Perfectly clean server inside. Cosmetic scratches, no bent or broken parts. Very happy with this deal.

The day I received it I tried to connect it and it did not work at all. I returned it the same day via UPS. Per the tracking number Amazon received it the very next morning now 2 weeks later I still do not have the refund so that I can purchase a new one. Telling me to wait 30 days for something that has been returned the very next day is an interruption and huge inconvenience to my business. Their slowness is causing me to lose money in my business that I just started and is very much need for the Grand Opening.

Had a minor problem getting this system set up and made the dreaded call to customer service at 6:30PM. Left a message and expected to hear from them next day, or never... To my surprise they called me in about an hour with a very helpful technician that resolved my technical issue very quickly and even provided software assistance which was entirely outside his scope of required service. Highly recommend!

Received the server, and when opening the chassis, discovered that the RAID controller heatsink was missing the spring-loaded studs that hold it on. It seems that when refurbishing the server, they attempted to just adhere the heatsink to the RAID controller with thermal paste, which obviously won't withstand shipping unless it's fully cured thermal paste. I started the server up and monitored temps closely just to test all the parts, and everything is working perfectly. I'm receiving the studs to mount the heatsink properly today, so once I have that squared away, I have a server operating as expected. Other than that issue, subtle scratches and dents, which are to be expected on a refurb.

The server that came had two issues (failed drivers) although the seller sent the replacement parts and everything is now good. I would purchase from them again.

It was stuck behind a "loading drivers, please wait" for 8 ish hours. After spending the weekend getting it to boot i looked into the problem and it is missing firmware that is only available behind an HP paywall if you pay for services & support. Too bad because the price is right and seems like it would be a great product. Minimum price of a plan is more than the server is. I'm sure thats why these are for sale. Dead.
