Fifty years into the future a team of astronauts are sent to deploy a device to reignite the dying sun.System Requirements:Running Time: 110 Mins.Format: BLU-RAY DISC Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE/RACE AGAINST TIME Rating: R UPC: 024543485537 Manufacturer No: 2248553 Review: Beautiful, lyrical movie; the way science fiction should be - Great science fiction (at least in my humble opinion) should include at least somewhat plausible science, but should so provide the audience something more, something emotional. This film's premise is mind-bending, and fascinating from a science perspective, but it is its commentary on the human spirit and philosophy that makes it truly remarkable. Without giving away too much, I will say that this movie was absolutely beautiful, lyrical, poignant, and ultimately uplifting, and touched me in a way I havent' been touched by a film in a long time. As per the film's brief description, the main plot revolves around our sun dying, and a group of astronauts are strapped to the back of a stellar bomb in an attempt to "re-ignite the sun", "create a star within a star". This film was not made with a huge budget, yet the filmmakers use their money very jucidiously, and were able to present some beautiful special effects shots that contributed greatly to telling the story, not just to look pretty. Watching this film you immediately understand how deadly the sun's heat is, and how crucial it is for everyone (and everything vulnerable) to stay in the shadow of the solar shield built at the head of the spacecraft. I appreciated how elegantly and clearly all these concepts were conveyed to the audience so that you can understand exactly what is going on, and feel the very real tension of the story. Stylistically this film is a true work of beauty and art. The design of the film was superb and striking. I loved the use of gold and black throughout the film, especially the look of the spacesuits and the Icarus spacecraft itself. The music was also particularly well-done and haunting. All-in all I just felt like the film was very polished, well-put together, and did not feel like a low-budget sundance movie at all, yet it had the sophistication and depth of an arthouse movie. There was obviously a great amount of care, effort, and talent applied to the look/feel/sound of this film, and the outcome is gorgeous. The acting is understated but superb by all involved, especially Rose Byrn, Chris Evanson, and Cillian Murphy. The desparation and growing tension of the crew is palpable. The audience feels like we are right there with them, aboard Icarus 2, hurtling towards both death and salvation. There is a great subtext of science vs. religion, faith vs. delusion, and hope vs. despair interwoven into the film. The twist in the 2nd act was terrifying. The ending was sublime and metaphysical. All in all, a great time was had watching this film. I finished watching "Sunshine" feeling...complete. There are lines in the film that haunt me and will stay with me. I don't have anything bad to say about this very underrated film. Definitely one of my favourites of all time, and one of the best science fiction movies of all time. Review: Very good movie - This is one of those movies where after watching it you only think, "Hmm" and forget about it. After about a day, it suddenly hits you just how powerful of a movie this is. Overall I think this movie is just perfect. When I first watched it, I thought the story was a bit silly. I pointed out all the various impossible scenarios and other inaccuracies within the movie. Then after thinking about it for a while, it suddenly dawned on me that regardless of what non factual errors they may have made, that isn't as important as the overall movie. That about sums up the plot of this movie as well: in the end, nothing really mattered, only the the singular fact. All the pain, hardship, all the emotions felt, all the desires, everything in the end didn't mattered. All that mattered was the overall mission. The movie Sunshine is a rather unique space movie. I say that because it's one of few movies that doesn't involve going from planet to planet, or anything of that kind. There's no aliens, no war, nothing. It's about a small crew trying to get to the sun to hopefully save the world. The sun is dying from some disaster and a scientific team is attempting to remedy that. In the end, you get a very small cast of characters and they all fit well. One thing this movie done well is show you that everyone is human, they have pain, fear, and emotion. At the same time, they have fear of their own immortality and therefore act out against the others in a way to preserve themselves. Yet, regardless of what their feelings are, the mission to save the world is far more important. The name Icarus fits the name of the space ship well. Those of you who don't know the story of Icarus, it's about a boy who tried to escape prison after his father made him wings from feathers and wax. His father told him not to fly close to the sun as the wax would melt, but not to go into the sea as the feathers would become wet and heavy. What happened was Icarus loved flight and kept going higher and higher closer to the sun only for the wax to melt, and he fell into the sea, where his feathers became wet and heavy. The story of Icarus fits the overall movie well enough. I highly recommend picking up the soundtrack to the movie as well. The song Adagio in D Minor is flat out one of the best musical orchestra I heard in a while. It goes well with the overall theme of the movie. Overall a must see for anyone. My thought is watch this movie picking up all the wrong things. You'll eventually think about it and in the end you'll realize this is one of the best movies you could watch in the past decade.

Wonderful film - Watch again with Scientist's commentary
I really enjoyed this film and enjoyed re-watching it with the commentary by Professor Brian Cox, the scientific consultant for the movie. Those reviewers who are stating that the science is poor (or even "ridiculous") may not have listened to this commentary. There are some errors, which Cox points out, but the overall idea is not impossible, or even so farfetched as to be 'virtually impossible'. Professor Cox is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in Particle Physics at the University of Manchester who also works on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva. In his commentary he mentions discussing with other scientists at CERN about the Q-ball hypotheses and relevance to sun-dying and restarting in the movie. (Incidentally, he seems to believe the existence these super-symetrical (or super-stable) objects will be proven (by CERN) within the next 10 years or so.) His problems with science in the movie tend to be some of the smaller issues (for example - the craft orbiting Mercury a few times, rather than just a 'sling-shot' use). His statement on what the penultimate scene means to him (even if it only occurs in a 'billionth of a second', or in 'the mind') is wonderful, and really impressed upon me the beauty, wonder, and awe many scientists hold for the universe. I think some reviewers only saw this scene in a literal earth-based perception of time and were put-off by it. Again, it's not necessarily meant to be seen that way. (And as mentioned earlier, Professor Cox's comment on its magnificence is inspiring.) Another criticism reviewers have mentioned was why so many unstable people were picked for these missions. Again, I think these reviewers may have missed something covered briefly in the film itself, and then more in depth in the commentaries. The people picked were stable and generally the very best in their field. Something with gravity, radiation, or another undefined characteristic of the sun caused mental problems . . . this was the reason the second mission included a psychologist, and the reason he was experimenting with the impact of sunlight exposure. I also think the writer was using individuals to highlight various aspects of human nature, but that might just be me. All that being said, this is not a Star Wars type of film. If that is what you are looking for, you may well be disappointed. On the other hand, it is a bit less obscure in meaning and plot than films like Solaris, and maybe even a bit easier to grasp on the first viewing than 2001, and, for me at least, imparted much of the wonder and awe that those films did. To anyone choosing to see this film on DVD, I'd recommend watching it, and then watching it again (or at the very least, the last five minutes of it) with Cox's commentary. In my opinion his comments make a really enjoyable film even better.

Decent Film
I'd say this is a pretty solid, introspective film. It is NOT the film for someone looking for light sci-fi action or science horror; there are elements of action and horror, but there are also long periods of little movement. Much of the story is really more of a psychological drama. It starts off fairly slowly, but picks up radically near the end. As the description indicates, this is the story of a small group of people on a mission to save the world against odds that are not impossible, but very small. Even the smallest error could spell failure, and failure means the extinction of all life on Earth. No pressure. The storyline picks up right before an unexpected find; the Icarus II locates a beacon from the long-lost Icarus I (and if there is ever a sign that your trip to the sun might not work out all that well, the fact that the name of the ship is the ICARUS would be it; I mean, really?). Decisions have to be made and things start to fall apart. What I liked: -The storyline was intriguing and made me think. -The actors were well cast and did a fantastic job, particularly Murphy and Evans. -The special effects of the Icarus itself were great, particularly the long-distance views of Icarus and the sun. Thinks that were well done, but not to my taste: -The movie maintains a very tense astmosphere the whole time, even before things start to go wrong. I would have preferred to have some lighter moments, particularly toward the beginning when they were still setting up the story line. Jokes among the crew, them relaxing together, that sort of thing. Instead, even the 'relaxation' scenes tend to be very heavy and loaded. -The action effects are very flashy. There is a lot of camera blur and pictures randomly popping up for a fraction of a second, and jumping from one scene to another, and I'm only glad I didn't watch it in the theater because it would have given me a massive headache. What I didn't like: -The story starts after they've already been on the mission, just 8 people in a relatively small space for 16 months; and yet they come across as mere acquaintances. 16 months with just 8 people. Come on, friendships should have formed by now, somebody should be having an affair, someone's getting a little too close to Icarus (the AI)--something should be going on other than just a group of acquaintances going about their individual lives. All I really saw was some mild-to-moderate dislike and equally mild attraction between a few of the characters. In a setting like this, the relationships between the characters SHOULD have been a major part of the plot, but it only seemed to touch on them lightly. Don't get me wrong, I think the individual characters were well-written; they all had distinct personalities. I just think the character dynamics were rushed, like important parts of the story were edited out. It made the story feel cold, even when it should have been hot. -There was a villain (as indicated in the previews), but they introduced him too late in the movie to have much impact, and gave very little of his background. He was scary, but also very random. Honestly, I think the movie would have been better if they left him out all together and focused more on the other characters.

Sunshine is Awesome...SEE THIS MOVIE!
i saw this movie 3 times in the theatre...simply because it's a fantastic movie. it's not a "perfect" film, and the only problem with it is the fact that the makers of "Sunshine" may have tried a little too hard on this film. At the end, there is definately a feeling of ridculous overkill with the multiple plots. HOWEVER, that being said...this is THE greatest sci-fi film made in the last decade OR two. i'm not kidding. it's a beautiful film and is crafted so well you won't forget it. i watch a LOT of films, and "Sunshine" hits the nail on the head so many times. if you miss this film, you are missing out on a lot. some of the scenes will just take your breath away. it's amazing. hell, writing this review i can't wait to see it again! think of some of the best sci-fi films in history...like "2001: A Space Odyssey", and the original "Alien". "Sunshine" opens with scenes almost taken directly out of your favorite sci-fi films...and NOT in a rip off kind of way, but in a honorable tribute. it's so refreshing to see a sci-fi film done right again. from the opening scene until the credits roll at the end, "Sunshine" takes itself extremely seriously and packs a HUGE punch of excitement, originality, and sheer fantastic film making. Danny Boyle, who did superb films like "Trainspotting" and "28 Days Later" once again has nailed another genre. sci-fi will NEVER be the same. see this movie ASAFP!

Blazing sun of hope!
Wow!! I'm a big fan of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland as well. Never knew about this until I bumped into an article by accident online. I was fascinated by the plot so I took a chance and acquired it. Wanted it on Blu ray but it wasn't available so I snagged the DVD and it was an amazing surprise. I highly recommend it. The cast is incredible. I hope they rerelease it on Blu ray with chunkier special features. All good though!

Please re-edit, Danny Boyle
I would have given this five stars for the acting, special effects, dialogue, direction, music, lighting, etc, etc, but I couldn't get past my disappointment that such a terrific science fiction movie turned into a gory, slightly absurd horror flick. I've read some reviews that insist it's not horror, but those selling the movie obviously think it is since all of the previews on this dvd are for horror movies. (The following contains SPOILERS.) But just for the sake of argument, let's say it's not horror but psychological science fiction, or "psy-fi". For the audience to get this we needed to be better prepared for Captain Pinbacker's lunatic advent. Perhaps something should have been brought up about Stendhal's Syndrome, and that staring at the sun could bring it on, and turn some into homicidal maniacs. They had a psychiatrist on board so they had many opportunities to prepare us and present the mayhem in a less hacker/gorefest manner. Something more in keeping with the first, wonderful eighty minutes of the film. Truthfully, I would trade all the blood, gore and gratuitous violence that you can get on any cheap B hacker film for the exquisite deleted scenes of life aboard the ship. I wish Danny Boyle would re-edit and dispense with the horror element. The movie doesn't need it to keep us riveted, mesmerised and enraptured. The Mercury scene is one of the most telling in cinema. And the quiet, sometimes desperate heroism throughout gets you in the gut, particularly Kaneda's death, Searle's death and Mace's. And yes, those last timeless moments of Capa's are otherworldly. The best in science fiction, which puts you, however briefly, in an altered state of mind. That is more important to me than getting the science exactly right...although I will admit I don't like sloppy writing: Why weren't Mace and Harvey tied to Capa when they blasted from one airlock to the other in open space? This seems like a no brainer, especially when we see Capa later in the Icarus II airlock, that he's about to explosively decompress, tie himself in place with handy strapping that is apparently part of every airlock. My guess is they needed to kill off another crewmember in their attempt to do Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" in space, and not following basic survival rules was a must. So much for this crew being the best and the brightest. Then there's the question: Wouldn't they have plenty of oxygen if they weren't filling up vast spaces with breathable air instead of concentrating it in just a few, small, vital areas? Other than these gripes and a few others like it too petty to mention , this is an amazing movie, and so are the special features.

Sunshine DVD - Superb movie
The movie came sealed and packaged and it is very difficult to find NEW. There are many top notch actors in this single movie and I'm glad they made use of their talents. Storyline is very suspenseful and contains thrilling type action. The most famous line in the movie if you haven't seen it yet goes something like this "...if you look up at the sky and it's particularly beautiful day, you know..." Great movie if you are a fan of suspenseful Sci-Fi and Space! Just have fun and enjoy the ride.

20 minutes into this blu-ray the volume jumped up and down by at least 10dB. Then from the scene of the oxygen garden onwards, dark black splotches were in every frame. This disk was played on a high end 4k player via a Yamaha receiver into a 75" QLED Samsung. Have requested a refund
