For just in case
For years I bought Sawyer water filtration products for backpacking, camping, and emergency disaster preparation. A few years back I bought the Survivor Filter Pro X. I was so impressed with its capabilities I also bought the manual pump Pro version, which is the reason why I bought the Survivor filter straw. Small and compact, it also offers way better flow rate and longevity for filtering water than some other popular brands, which Iโve owned and didnโt like. I have a lot of different water filtration system brands and Survivor Filters is my favorite with Sawyer being a close second. I havenโt used these filtration straws but, trust that they will work fine based on doing a lot of posted test reviews by others. These will remain in their box for emergency situations. Iโm not a hardcore survival prepper type but, I do like to be prepared in case a fast bug out SHTF situation happens. I have all the bases covered for several months worth of survival food, first aid, firearms, ammo, gear, etc but, water will always be the most critical part of survival. You can only store so much water before the need arises for more water. Also, donโt forget to stock up on replacement filters or youโll find yourself needing to boil water, which can be time consuming if boiling for consumptionโฆ

Great but...
Despite being the best โstrawโ that I know of on the market, why use it, when you can bring the big brother, the Survivor Filter Pro with you for roughly the same weight and size. That said, I have two Survivor Filter Proโs and one extra filter set, which gives me roughly 78k gallons of โcleanโ water. Iโve also got one of these for each of the people in my household. On top of that I have the largest and smallest Berkey on the market and a sustainable chlorine source. Iโve put allot of money and effort into providing my family with clean water no matter what. Remember, that the carbon filter on these (fast, smell and some heavy metals) is used up well before the virus/bacterial filtration is. Remember too the difference between nominal and absolute pore size. The nominal (average, kinda) on this is 0.05, the absolute (largest pore) is 0.25. What this means is that their filters are filtering out things .05 microns or larger at a specific rate. In this case, that rate is 99.999, the 0.25 is the size of their largest pore in the filtering medium. The only other company that comes close to this is MSR and their 99.99 nominal rate is .02 but this isnโt a straw, they are hand pumps and gravity bags, plus they make no attempt at filtering out fast, smell, heavy metals, etc. Why not go with the Survivor Filter Pro (if youโre only gonna buy one) with a nominal pore size of .01 at 99.9999 effectiveness. This product, though less effective than its big brother, is easier to use on the go. Fill up the water bottle with dirty water and go. Where the Filter Pro, requires several tubes out, pumping, etc. So itโs a question of, do you need to get the water and run, or can you sit around for 5 minutes?

Functional, Durable, Lightweight
The collapsable water bottles are convenient, incredibly light weight, durable, and affordable. Being able to stand upright when full is a convenience I didn't know I needed, but am glad to have. The carabiner and handle are durable for hanging. The lid protects that cap from debris and is easy to use. I like that they're transparent and will be able to see if the interior ever gets dirty. They are hand wash only but have a large enough spout where they can easily be washed and left open to air dry. The filter is lightweight, convenient, and adapts to the water bottles easily. I haven't had to use the filter yet because I'll keep it for emergencies. It's good insurance to keep in your pack or vehicle to ensure clean drinking water. Overall, highly recommend for affordable a water carrying and filtration solution.

favorite filter
First,[...] I personally got to this from thinking it was the Renovo filter, only difference is the name. The only one that actually takes viruses away! I have been using Sawyer for two years, two things that I hate, one is their bags break fairly easily when used in backpacks. The cap on this filter is much better than the Sawyer mini, I had a cap break off just by regular use, I do not expect that to happen here. What surprised me is I did not have to have to use an 0 ring, and with the O ring I notice the Sawyers tend to leak pretty easily. I have had an O ring degrade so if you are doing a long term backpacking thing, you have to worry about that eventually. I also like the color better, much more suited for going to the woods like I plan to do. Good flow rate. I enjoyed the Sawyer but this one is military grade and I believe somewhere I read that the Renovo was the only one resistent to winter freezing, but I forget were I read that, or maybe it was a video. Sawyer served me will, but I sort of do not trust it is filtering everything, this one is a guarantee. tip, do not leave it on all the time while moving around, this will damage the canteen you can buy.

18 months later, still outperforming
This filter is amazing. The first couple thru hikes, I had access to fresh springs for the filters potential was less obvious. Itโs been throughout Florida with me, including through Hurricane Irma and Iโve traveled to Cuba with it and I drank tap water with it. No (intestinal) issues ever! The latest trek was through Myakka River State Park where the backcountry water sources are all old pumps with high sulfur, high iron water. A friend had a different brand filter...and VERY popular brand on the trail (*cough* Sawyer *cough*) and theirs was inadequate. The pic was taken in a dark tent during a storm, sorry for the low quality image. What you are looking at is orange water that had already been filtered with the Sawyer and the iron was still present and the water still had a strong sulfur smell and taste. The other bottle is what water looks like with the Survival Filter. No discoloration, no sulfur smell/taste, very, very mild mineral flavor. Amazing difference. Downsides which I recommend you suck it up and choose this one anyway: 1. The filter is a bit heavier that other ones. But, I mean, come on...look at the pic!! 2. The filter flow does slow down very quickly with each filtered liter. It helps to pre-filter with a cloth first. Again, Iโd rather have the best water and take a little more time to get it. Bring a few extra cotton pads and switch those out to help keep the flow rate up.

Actually Works
TL;DR: works exactly as advertised! I took this system with me on a long hike in Guam. The hike ended up being longer and more difficult than originally anticipated, but, I was able to quickly acquire and process some... very questionable water for myself and another person on the hike. Absolutely saved us from dehydration, or anything worse. The water in question was in a pool at the base of a waterfall. Overgrown with algae and scum, and full of fresh water shrimp and some small fish. We weren't sure if it would work, but figured dysentery later was preferable to dehydration and heat exhaustion now. Luckily our fears were unfounded, and I trust this system completely. My one complaint: it's easy to cross thread the filter onto the bag, which can allow unfiltered water to escape the bag neck. I recommend a test squeeze before you hold it over your clean water container, but otherwise, great setup!

Just in case
Keep one in each of my vehicles, my backpack, and my camping gear. You never know when or where you might need it. Tested one in a nearby stream and it must have worked as I've had no ill effects.

Satisfied
I used this filter for my travels in Malaysie. I could drink tap water without getting a stomach ache. Thats very good! The reason for me to choose this filter over others, is the added benefit of the carbon filter. It really helps with reducing odors from water (chlorine for example)! When you want to use the filter to filter water into another drinking bottle, it takes a while, thats too bad. The water doesn't flow very smoothly through it. Therefore 1 star reduction.
