WOW. This stuff returned my ancient Columbia rain jacket to near-new condition. I wasn't expecting THAT. It was faded and limp. When I pulled it out of the dryer, it looked like a magic trick occurred (lol). The black color was deepened and evened out. I tested the finish with water, and it beaded right off. Now, this isn't water-proof, but water repellent. Good enough. Impressed with this performance; I ordered the Down Wash Direct/Down Proof duo for my pricy Lands End coat. It got washed, by mistake, with regular detergent, compromising the rain repellent finish. Yeah, DON'T do that to your down products. This stuff fluffed up and restored the water-beading properties. I suggest drying down items with the old 'tennis ball trick'. Pop in 3-4 tennis balls in the dryer. It's a bit noisy, put makes a huge difference in the re-lofting of the down. One note: you really must use the prewash product (Tech Wash) before using the the waterproofing product. And, the washing machine must be clean of detergent BEFORE this 2 step process is applied. The failures that other users have posted may be due to NOT FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS. I would be wary of using public laundromat machines, as they may be encrusted with detergent products. I'll be using these Nikwax products in the future. THIS STUFF WORKS.

I had a few older North Face Hyvent shells to treat. I live here on the PNW coast of WA, so I need good performing rainwear as I trail run in the rain a few times a week. I had used the scotch guard spray in the past but still got so wet through in spots.....So this product.. I used a 5 gallon bucket with 2 gallons of water in it to make it really concentrated...poured in the entire bottle and stirred it up. I then put my two coats into the mix and made sure all was wet and covered. I let them sit for about an hour and then drained the excess water back into the bucket to reuse for two more coats. That bottle treated 4 items for me. They hung outside for about 2 hours to get rid of the dripping water, then a quick spin in the washer(no water just a spin cycle) to remove a little more water and then they went into the dryer on low for abut 30 minutes. I did not wat to over dry them in the dryer so then I took the slightly damp coats out and let them dry totally in my basement x1 day with a fan blowing on them. No smell from not doing a water rinse and they now shed water like they were new. Much easier than putting them in the washer I think. It takes a little effort and time but it was money well spent. btw I did not pre wash them with the Nikwax. They were pretty clean, no mud but a few dirty spots. I did not care if they looked brand new, just worked in the rain. These were used coats I got online for $30 each...used to be $$250 shells new...and they were 20 plus years old. I wear them 5 days a week when I am on a trail run with a pack. Final verdict is Nikwax is easier than scotch guard, better coverage, no smell, and works out to about $4 per coat....a pretty good deal.

UPDATE: I have a problem with one of my numerous cats (6 - IT'S NOT MY FAULT, a cat had 3 kittens under my porch & I had to keep all of them, it was kitten season !! ) has a habit of piddling (thoroughly) on the pet beds in the living room (I have not caught her yet, so I don't know which one is doing it - I need to get a hunting camera). I was constantly washing bed covers, the beds themselves, and the floor below them. I was sick of it. I did thorough research and found this product, and also spent 15 minutes on the phone with a very helpful young man who explained everything I needed to know about waterproofing cotton versus polyester fabric. I specifically consulted with him about cotton canvas. He explained that cotton canvas waterproofs by having the cotton fabric swelling with the addition of water, which closes the gaps between the threads. This product does not work on cotton canvas. That's why I opted for Sunbrella fabric, which is very flexible, sew-able, and 100% polyester. I have waterproofed two pet bed covers (one with fake sheepskin on one side) and the Sunbrella cloth that I also bought..The directions state 10 ounces for three items on the lowest water setting possible, at Heavy Duty washing (which washes longer). I actually washed it a bit longer before I ran it through the rinse. After rinsing, it just felt a little more slick, but the fabric and fleece was still soft. I have put oe of the pet beds back together and placed it on the floor and waited. Reliably, the Unknown Cat piddled, as per her usual method. And, Lo and Behold! IT ALL POOLED ON THE PET BED! Hurrah! It was easy to clean off. Nothing went through to the cushion. THE STUFF WORKS ! This was a couple of weeks ago. I find it interesting that the cat, since then, has not tried the same thing. She's probably annoyed that it didn't soak in, and I hope she's abandoned the idea as a bad job. I have now sewn the Sunbrella into flat covers for the woven dog & cat bed (woven with a good polyester webbing that absorbs liquids), attached grommets to the edges, and attached the grommets to the bed frames (they look a lot like benches with woven seats). This week will be the moment of truth - Will the Bad Kitty piddle again? I'll see how it works. ***************************** This is for further waterproofing some Sunbrella fabric for a pet bed. Haven't tried it yet, but the [...] company's 800 number will cheerfully answer any question you have. They were extremely helpful, and explained everything. NOTE: This is designed to work on polyester fabrics. It is NOT for waterproofing cotton canvas. Cotton and polyester work very differently.

I followed the mfg institutions for using both the tech wash and this product. I washed a 2yo road crafter 1 piece riding suit from Aerostitch who recommended this product. My suit wasn't terrible soiled but smelled funky from sweat on the inside. Zip, velocity, remove armor, go back and do m check zippers and Velcro again. Drop it in, let the washer fill, dump in the wash in waterproofing. I ran the suit s second time with what I had left in the bottle. You only need 5oz of wash but 10oz of waterproofing. I did it twice at 5&5oz. You then put it into the dryer which sets the chemical to make it waterproof. Fully dry took nearly 2.5 hrs on med heat.

Product works well, but short shelf life. The product separates and begins to dry once container is opened. Recommend using it all in a matter of a few months. 6 month old product would not mix up and left the article to be waterproofed sticky and not waterproof. Otherwise this is a good product. Maybe buy a smaller amount?

Be sure to read the instructions, including pre-rinsing the washer to remove any residual laundry detergent and using the Nikwax Tech Wash first before using the Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In Waterproofing Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In Waterproofing . I bought both the Tech Wash and TX.Direct in 30.4 oz bottles. Please note: The Tech Wash will use about 10 oz per load (max of 6 garments), whereas the TX.Direct will use 10 oz per load (max of 3 garments). I grabbed all of the rain jackets, ski parkas, backpacking pants, gloves, anything that I needed to be treated. I had nylon shells, Gore-Tex garments and various synthetic accessories that I wanted to try. Afterwards, I tumble dried them all in low heat. The results were great! The outer material of my Gore-Tex garments that used to soak with water now repels them easily. Better than new, I think. The other garments and gloves repel water equally as well. NOTE: It is not mentioned anywhere, but after using the TX.Direct Wash, be sure to clean and wash your dryer lint screen with warm soapy water (this should be done a few times a year anyway). Otherwise, moisture does not pass through the screen very well. You can test this by putting your screen under the faucet. The water should pass through the screen very easily. If the water pools or does not pass through cleanly, then the screen material is clogged with detergent, fabric softener or water repellent. Just a suggestion.
