All materials have a tendency to deflect away from the cutting tool when you are turning them in a lathe. This tendency is especially noticeable on long, slender parts and long pieces of bar stock, which makes it quite difficult to hold close tolerances. The best way to support a long part is with a center mounted in the tailstock. However, for one reason or another this is not always possible. As an example, it may be a piece of stock that you want to center drill so that you can mount it between centers, or it may be a part where a center drill hole would ruin the looks of the part. Whatever the reason, a steady rest provides a means of supporting the part while it turns. The Sherline steady rest has three adjustable brass blades mounted in a holder that mounts on the bed of the lathe. These blades can be adjusted to the diameter of the part to provide necessary support. Another advantage of the steady rest that is often overlooked is the fact that work held in position by the rest turns concentrically with its outside diameter. This means that concentricity is assured when working near the steady rest, because, at that point, it must be running perfectly true despite imperfections in how it is chucked or centered at either end. The Sherline steady rest will accommodate any size part up to 1.75″ (44mm) in diameter.

Sherline stuff is just great- accurate and as inexpensive as they can make them with quality
Fits perfectly, works beautifully- easy to adjust, accurate, stable, no problems.

TINY!!!!
Unfortunately the description is very lacking.I have a 7x12 lathe with a 3"diameter chuck, was hoping to use this m but without my spending more money for a spacer it is useless. The overall height of this is maybe 3" so less than 2" from bed to center.Might work on a watchmakers lathe with a 1/2" chuck.

Questionable design?
Unit works well as advertised but the bed locking screw should be on the other end of the base. The brass rub guides with their locking screws, as I use it, are on the tailstock side, and the screw that locks it to the bed is on the back side. Makes it awkward to tighten it to the bed. If you reverse the unit then the headstock is in the way of the three locking screws as I use it quite close to the headstock to support clock arbors while turning pivots.

Works Great
Replaced the supports with ball bearing tipped supports and rest works wonders for holding work. This has much less vibration.

Beware the clamp!
Most of the steady rest is fine, but be careful with the clamp! I tightened mine a bit too much and it cracked. The casting seems like it's pretty poor quality.I'm going to try replacing the clamp with the riser clamp, PN 13920. It appears to be a piece of machined metal rather than a casting. If that works, then it's definitely worth the extra $12. I'll update the review once I get the part in.EDIT 04/03/2019I received PN 13920 from Sherline. It works great! The original clamp is of exceedingly poor quality, but the machined part fits well enough and seems like it'll last.
