Vintage Hair Styles of the 1940s: A Practical Guide

This book is awesome. It's full of great information, as well as step-by-step written & photographed directions for hair styles. They even provide diagrams of pin curl sets for each hair style mentioned.

I think the book is very well written. It has a history of the style, tools that were used as well as what a person can use today, and step by step instructions on how to create some of the classic styles from that period of time. I can't wait to try one!

Bought it for my daughter who loves that era of hairstyles

This is a decent book. It covers the history of 40s hair (which I liked) and breaks down how to do specific styles. It also shows you how to do pin curls in a variety of ways. The step-by-step instructions were helpful. However, I was disappointed that there were very few pictures of 40s women in the styles. Instead, the book is full of contemporary women modeling the styles... it would have been nice to see the model alongside a 40s example. Also, the book is written from a British perspective. So, instead of a history of 40s styles from an American perspective, it's British. Also, the terminology is British, which I (as a Canadian) found difficult. There are enough new terms anyway without having to constantly remind myself that a tong is a curling iron and a kirby grip is a bobby pin. If you are just interested in the 40s, this is probably still a good book, but if not (and if you appreciate American references) I might try (although it's more expensive) Vintage Hairstyling instead.

I've been trying vintage hairstyles for months, and almost gave up because I felt like I was too clumsy for it.. But this book actually provides different methods for styling hair and all their trouble shooting tips are amazing! The book also contains thorough step by step images, which is great for those who are "beginners" with their hair. I've read a few other vintage styling books and this one's my favorite.

The contents of this book are phenomenal. Really informative for anyone wishing to recreate vintage hairstyles. Unfortunately it smells so strongly of cigarettes that I'll have to leave it in my garage to air out as much as possible. I don't want to have to return it but that may be what happens.
