On the Night You Were Born

A wonderful story book to gift to any child or newborn. A touching tale of the world’s celebration on the day of a child’s birth. Now in a sturdy board book form, for all those story time moments, with beautiful illustrations. It’s sure to be a classic in every home, because every child, biological or adopted, is precious and celebrated!

This book is excellent for children of all ages (the first time I read it to my granddaughter I shed a few tears it is so touching). It was always the first book she chose when we sat down to read. This particular copy is made of heavy cardboard and is well bound for years of reading pleasure. Each page is laminated with high quality glossy paper that can be wiped with a damp cloth if needed. The format is easy for children to follow as it has rhymes and the animations are bright and well done. The book talks about the uniqueness of the child and how there has never been anyone like them ever on earth. Additionally, the animations lend themselves to encourage children to use their imagination and make up their own story as they flip through the pages. I purchased this copy for my great-granddaughter who will arrive in August. I can't wait to spend hours reading it with her and challenging her to use her imagination as we see the animals come to life on the pages of the book. Well worth the money and pleasure it brings to both the reader and your precious child.

IfThe few people who didn't love this book seemed to find it too mushy or self centered. I would like to address these issues in my review. First, yes, it is totally, wonderfully mushy. If you can't stand that stuff, this might not be the choice for you. If you can, this story reads like a tender lullaby that captures the love we have for our children. Second, is it catering to a generation of self important brats? Does it imply that your child is the center of the universe? Some parents think that this story over emphasizes how special our children are. "On the night you were born, the moon smiled with such wonder..." They wonder how to explain to their children that stars don't peek at them and polar bears don't dance for them. The story essentially is just giving several examples of the beauty of nature and implies that animals and rain, etc, are celebrating and loving that child. I see these as sweet examples of creation and how each child is deeply connected to all of it. I could read it to any child (not only my own) and genuinely mean it everytime- yes, you are that special. Kids who do develop an inflated sense of self importance, well, they didn't get it from sharing a loving bed time story, so don't worry! Beyond all of that, the illustrations are just beautiful, the story is lovely and poetic. My favorite parts (and my toddlers) are where the story pauses to address the child directly. "So enchanted with you were the wind and the rain that they whispered the sound of your wonderful name. (The sound of your name is a magical one. Let's say it out loud before we go on...") And again later, as it pauses to let the child wiggle their "silly, wiggly, wonderful toes." It is so cute to watch your toddler wiggle his toes as you read this to him. It ends with three simple words of profound truth and importance: You are loved.

I Absolutely Love This Book!! This book is an amazing addition to any collection of books to read to your little ones!! It's beautifully written, the pages are nice and thick, and the illustration is done beautifully also. Such a heartwarming book! "On the night you were born, the moon smiled with such wonder, that the night wind whispered, life will never be the same; because there has never been a you, ever, in the world. So enchanted with you, were the wind and the rain, that they whispered the sound of your beautiful name." Although I could write the story for you, I'd say just buy it, you won't be disappointed!!

This book is beautifully written. The perfect book to read over and over and over again to a child. A lovely affirmation of how special and unique a child is. I buy a copy as a gift for every baby shower I attend.

This is such a cute book that I think any child & parent would love. It's a story about the birth of a child. It's illustrated very nicely. And it will stand the test of time because of it's heavy duty laminated pages.

I LOVE this book! I have gotten this book for shower gifts, baby gifts and my granddaughters. It such a sweetly written and illustrated book. Easy to read to a child and they love to hear it. I love books by Nancy Tillman, they’re magical and make my granddaughter’s feel special when I read this book to them.
