Review: James Holland is one of the best military historians writing today, and Sicily ’43 proves why. This book reads like a thriller. Holland doesn’t just explain strategy, he puts you inside the campaign. By following soldiers and officers from both sides, you feel the tension, fear, confusion, and determination of men fighting in one of WWII’s most important battles. What I found especially fascinating was how Holland challenges common myths. The Allies had superior equipment and fire power, but Sicily’s mountainous terrain favored the defenders and slowed their advance. He also explains how the Germans and Italians managed to evacuate tens of thousands of troops despite Allied air and naval superiority due to the narrow geography and heavily defended coastline, something I hadn’t fully appreciated before. Operation Husky was the largest amphibious invasion in history at the time, and the scale of planning, coordination, and logistics was extraordinary. This was also a crucial learning experience for American forces, who were fighting their first major campaign against Nazy Germany. This is history at its best: engaging, human, and deeply informative. Highly recommended for anyone interested in WWII.
