Vermiculite is meant for organic gardening. It is a natural substance It helps to retain moisture in the soil. I have used it in my gardens without issue.

Why is the company not clarifying "medium" to those leaving a negative review? A "medium" is not refering to size, look up "plant medium"!!

I bought both medium and course. They were just about the same size with the course being slightly larger. See my reviews with pictures

Is this asbestos free?

Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral (magnesium, aluminum, iron silicate) it is mined by various countries around the world including the United States and Africa. Vermiculite in ore concentrate and in exfoliated state may contain small quantities of crystalline silica as quartz. This is usually only present in non-respirable particles, but mechanical milling can create respirable particulate size. I wear a good mask when using. Always play it safe. Whereas asbestos is a group of specific silicate minerals that form bundles of long very thin mineral fibers. The form and structure of these fibers is called asbestiform.

So, is this roughly 30 lbs of material? I'm having trouble visualizing how much 4 sq. ft. is and if I can lift it by myself, etc.

It's cubic feet. If you know what an old time milk crate is just stack 4 of them on top of each other and that's pretty much how big it is. It weighs less than 4 gallons of milk. Scooping it out is easy. It has a lot of dust so you might need a mask
