Yes, they are kept in the end cap of the battery compartment.

I know that this flashlight is made for d and aa batteries with a conv. kit. but in a pinch can i use two c batteries?

Unless there is a conversion kit for C batteries then no. The batteries are not big enough to touch the contacts.

what kind of batteries does it take?

Classic D cell but I bought the Fulton conversion kit to run AA batteries with an led bulb. This was an inexpensive upgrade that has really brought this light into the modern age. A must have if you will
