Can these be installed into drywall without a stud?

You probably could with wall anchors. Just remember you only have drywall holding it up. I prefer a stud. They are fairly light and the switch is fairly soft without a lot of impact on the wall board,. you have a backplate to secure to the wall and then the lamp covers that plate and is screwed on. Overall. I'm pleased. Installation is fairly intuitive but read the instructions anyway.

What size is the wall plate? I need width in inches please. Thank you.

4 1/2 inches.......mounting screws 2 5/8 inches from each other
