Being in the 'drops position' is much more comfortable and aerodynamic than holding onto the bar from the centre, while also being far safer than using aero bars. The downside is that your hands will be away from the brakes and shifter, which requires you to be mindful of road conditions and when to switch positions. However, it's less of an issue if you're in the 'ramps position' where your hands are closer to them.
