Question 1

How's this game holding up after a few plays (still fun and challenging)? Is the replayability good? Does it drag with the max amount of players?

Accepted Answer

After playing it 6 times you begin to realize the strategy isn't that deep and the encounters, while fun and novel become predictable and are not connected in any really meaningful way. It's an above average game and a great entry point into more complex games for casual players. I adore the art work and it does at least offer a lot of variety. Basically it gets old.

Question 2

is this the expanded KS edition that included the wooden components?

Accepted Answer

No wooden components, but all the pieces are very heavy stock cardboard. Well built game and still one of our favorites after over a year of playing it.

Question 3

The game says ages 13-15. Is there anything that would be inappropriate for elementary school aged children? Is it difficult to master?

Accepted Answer

It is not difficult to master, but the person playing it must like role-playing games / developing story / table top exploration games.
I would say it is a fantastic board game enthusiasts that love character development and pick your own adventure.

I played through this game few times and I did not see anything inappropriate for elementary children. However with so many game pieces and tokens and rules you really can't give this game to any kid that don't have a short attention span.

Question 4

How does the gameplay and fun compare to betrayal at house on haunted hill? we enjoy that game and this sounds similar. dice based, stories...

Accepted Answer

Trying to not be too vague, the gameplay is similar yet different. Betrayal uses cards to tell the story or give you pieces and you have no control over your path or decisions to make. Above and Below uses a book which is more like those old 'choose your own adventure' books. Betrayal is more morbid (satanic themes) and A&B is just a happy fantasy world, and although we have fun playing Betrayal, I like A&B for my family (with kids) and Betrayal for a more mature crowd. I think over time (a long time) you will start to see more repetitive stories in A&B yet with Betrayal, there are so many possibilities that you will never repeat the same game twice. That being said, we have both games and we would still rather play A&B.
