I love this thing. It installs fairly easy and it works amazing. It's been on the truck about 6 months now and I use the tailgate almost every day. One knock in the reviews says the stud pulls out but I didn't have any problem with that. Looks really cool when it just eases down instead of banging.

This is so nice to have on my tailgate, no more slamming or trying to catch it before it slams. Easy to install, you can watch a video on youtube.

This is my second 'unit', by no fault of the product. The dampener, like all of them this style, eventually goes bad. Ordered this time and only had to replace that part. All the previous hardware worked just fine. The tailgate-end hardware looks to be upgraded with a better insert thread and tooling than the previous version. All that is just in the kitchen junk drawer now...

My entire experience with this Heavy Duty Tailgate shock was disastrous. I ordered it on Amazon which listed it as an “OMT Compatible with 09-22 Ram 1500 2500 3500 Pickup Tailgate Assist, Truck Tailgate Lift Assist Kit Compatible with 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 Dodge Ram”. I have a 2020 Ram 1500. It did NOT fit. This comedy of errors began with the initial delivery from Amazon. They delivered an empty plastic bag addressed to me and emailed me a picture of the “flat” empty bag saying they had delivered my order. I the had a long call with Amazon Support trying to explain that my order had not been delivered, I received an empty bag (and they had a picture to prove it). After arguing that, “No, I did not need to check with my neighbors, or around the outside of my house, to make sure it wasn’t “just” lying somewhere else”, they agreed to send a replacement. And then the real fun began. When I finally received it and began to install it, the first thing I noticed was that the enclosed instructions stated under a “Fitment” header that it fit “2009-2015 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500”. Before proceeding with the installation, I contacted OMT support to very it was supposed to fit my 2020 Ram 1500. I also told them that the nutsert included appeared to be too small for the slot the instructions said to put it in. The replied it was all the correct kit for my truck. I proceeded with the installation – or tried to. I had to deal with that the pictures in the instruction were all of a 2009-2018 Ram. 2019 and later is quite different. The tailgate latch post and cable bolt are recessed into the bed upright (and not on the earlier models). The hole on the tailgate hinge the instructions say to put the nutsert into is a slot and much bigger on my 2020 than what is pictured. I stated by installing the nutsert. I had difficultly because it did not fit snuggly in the slot and I had to tighten it considerably more than the 9 turns the instructions say before it became stable and ridged. I then moved to installing the Ball Mount, which the instructions said needed a 13 mm wrench. It wasn’t 13 mm, it was a 12 mm. This made me wonder if I should have gotten a larger nutsert and ball mount. I then moved to removing the cable bolt with the include torx wrench. That wrench did not fit, it was too big (T50). The cable bolt was a T45. I had to stop and go buy a T45 socket ($6.00). It wouldn’t have mattered if the included wrench had fit. It was too short to remove the cable bolt. It was so tight (with locktite) that I had to use my impact wrench to get it out. I finally got the ball posts in and started putting the shock on. I rubbed on the bed upright and pulled the rubber gasket off it. When I finally got it on and tried to lower the tailgate for the first time, it immediately pulled the ball mount and nutsert out of the slot on the tailgate hinge. The slot was so wide that only the very tips of the expansion arms on the nutsert had any purchase and two of the four immediately folded in. I removed the shock, boxed up all the pieces and threw it in the trash! That’s my advice.

Installed this tailgate assist on my 2020 Ram 2500 and it’s been working great so far. It makes a noticeable difference when lowering the tailgate. No more heavy drops, just a smooth and controlled motion. The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because a few of the parts included weren’t clearly mentioned in the instructions. That said, the install was still pretty straightforward, and I was able to figure everything out without any real issues. Overall, it feels well made, does exactly what it’s supposed to do, and is a great upgrade for the truck. If the instructions were a bit clearer, this would easily be a 5‑star product. I’d still recommend it anyone that is looking for one.

Product is perfect but you need to buy cover plate for tailgate or the stud will break in hole

Easy to install. Works as it should. Tailgate now comes down nice and slow. Does not help that much coming up.

Installation was easy maybe 15 mins with hand tools . Works great ! Looks heavy duty I will have to see how long it lasts but good buy for 32 bucks .

Works great! Easy install. I took my time and prepainted and greased every piece of hardware to prevent rusting on my new truck, especially the nutsert going into the tailgate!! I would suggest using plastic isolators between the cable end and tailgate to prevent any wearing.
