Do the plates adjust the distance from razor to skin or only degree of razor angle?

The differences between the 6 options are both the millimeters of exposure of razor and the gap between both plates. For example, the R1 has very little razor exposed and it is tight between the two plates. There is virtually no chance of cutting yourself. R6, on the other hand has a lot of blade exposed and a large gap (for experienced shavers). R2-5 are a sliding scale between those two extremes. It is the best razor I've ever shaved with and the customizable options are great for all skin and hair types.

How is this product different than the safety razor my grandfather used, and why is it “better”? What specifically is new/different?

The older double edge razors were nicer in that they were made out of brass plated with nickel instead of zinc alloy plated with chrome like the modern DE razors. That being said, this particular razor is adjustable by using different plates, and that is a plus (can make the shave more or less aggressive). And the handles of the newer razors have better ergos. If you have a heavy beard, a slant bar double edge razor is a nice option (I have a Merkur slant bar I really like) . But this Rockwell 6C would probably work for most guys. I consider one if I were in the market.

Will the razor itself rust? I understand the blades are stainless steel.

The razor is chrome plated over a cast zinc-alloy. It cannot rust. Stainless steel blades can rust, depending on the quality of the stainless used.

How many base plates does this razor come with?

Three reversible base plates for a total of 6 shave settings. The only safety razor that has this reversible plate adjustable system.

Great razor with a bulky head

The razor is well made, sturdy and the good kind of heavy. The ability to select aggresiveness level is a big plus (1 and 2 - you can't feel the blade at all which may lead to overdoing some bits). My sweet spot is at level 4. The double sided guards result in making the head kind of bulky, but it doesn't mean you can't shave those pesky spots under the nose well. Good razor all in all!

poor quality not as hyped

The gun metal chrome was worn out from the top when i opened the box and took the razor , such a cheap quality seriously and the price is not cheap, if the gun metal chrome wears out while packed imagine what using the razor would do to it. Really disappointed! Initiated a return!

Amazing !!
