Is the stained model also pine it appears to have an oak grain which would be preferable?

Definitely pine, I used a dremmel to sand off some stain from the holds so that the grip wouldn't be slick and it sands very easily

Is the stain nontoxic?

No way of knowing. But it’s holding up very well above a door jam. Lots of use and the wood looks great still

Do both of the color options have a finish or is the natural color unfinished? From my experience a finished piece of wood will be more slippery.

The color finish DOES make is slippery. I sanded it and roughed it up
