Since Qt documentation lacks explanations beyond basics, I figured this book would help me get started writing my first Qt application by providing a hands-on approach, as claimed by its title. What a mistake! This book is for development novices wishing to keep things simple but definitely not for C++ professionals who want to use Qt for their application GUIs. It is sparse and superficial to a fault, worse even than the official Qt documentation. I've read it twice in order to memorize its contents but can't use it to find answers to basic questions raised by first-time development issues, such as "how to add a layout to a tab widget" or "how to set widget values in a dialog window". Luckily the site stackoverflow.com provides all needed answers, as long as you frame your questions correctly. I check it on average ten to twenty times a day with success, whereas this book doesn't start addressing such fundamental issues. I thought it would help me save time but in fact it's been nothing but a waste of time and money. My advice to C++ pros wishing to dab into Qt: don't buy this book, it's 99% useless. Rating should be 1/10 of a star.
