Which direction is the flow? To the water shut off valve or to the water fridge line

The flow is from the water source, the shut off valve under your sink or in the water line somewhere to the filter. So the "flow" marking with an arrow on the filter points toward your fridge.

how long in months or years will this filter be effective?

2500 gallons is what is go with. Ebery 6 months may be fine if you use the icemaker a lot. But if not go by gallon count.

this only comes with 7' of line & my refrigerator is 12' away from my sink line do they offer a longer line?

Longer lines can be purchased separately.

will this filter remove the salt taste from a water softener ?

I believe the salt taste in water softeners is from salt being dissolved in the water. I also believe that filters remove particles from water, not chemicals dissolved in the water. So, I don't believe that this filter will remove the salt taste from water softeners. This may or may not be accurate, but it's my belief.
