Would someone kindly explain why this Orbit with a brass connector gets lower ratings than what looks to be the same timer with a plastic connector?

I personally prefer brass connectors, plastic have the potential to crack or ruin the connecting threads if they are not properly aligned; my personal experience.

Can this be set for any day of the week, ie, every 4, 5, 6 or 7 days? My DIG, cannot. It jumps from day 4 to 7.

The frequency is set by the number of days...so 1 is every day, 2 is every two days, and so on. You can also set every 6 hours or 12 hours. And you have start times as well.

how often do I need to replace batteries?

I set my system to water for about 20 minutes every morning, as our climate is pretty dry. Batteries normally last the whole season, (roughly 4 months) but this year they only lasted about 2 to 2 1/2 months. You need to pay attention because, of course, lack of water can kill flowers.

Yes, The timer has 3/4 inch hose thread. If you were going to use it on the end of a pipe, there are adapters to get from hose to pipe and vice versa. As far as I know, Orbit does not have the adapters, but Home Depot, Lowes or most any hardware store sells them.
