Why do all of the pictures of flapper valve show from the top? The size of the bottom piece is what you need to see to order the right flapper.

The only guess I can make is that if there is a bar going across the top, it won't fit an older one-piece Kohler toilet so this differenciates it right away. I have the older model so I need this flapper without the black bar. The bar fits between the two extended arms you see in the picture. I made the mistake of ordering the one with the bar, model #GP84995, and it just didn't work. This model, GP83064 is the only one I found that sits on the opening properly and doesn't leak. I think my toilet is from 1989, when my home was built.

Is there a coordinating valve seal for this flapper?

No that I know, the flapper seals the hole on the lower part of the water box.
