Would these work for an outside event of about 300 people?

Like someone else said - depends on the type of event. I use these in combination with a Behringer B1200D powered subwoofer and would be willing to do a 300 person wedding with this combo. Make sure you set them up properly and use an appropriate amplifier. Get them on good stands so the sound is at head level (or higher) and not being absorbed by bodies.

I have 2JBL's JRX125 dual 15" 2-way speaker sounds perfect but I am getting old so I like something lighter but quality has to be close

You didn't say what you're using them for and if you have a subwoofer but have you looked at the plastic speakers ? They are light and sound pretty decent.
