Forse il più sentito e difficile libro di Ishiguro. Va letto lentamente, assaporando ogni frase. Sembra quasi un thriller ma in realtà è una storia di rivisitazione dell'infanzia e uno spaccato di vita nella Cina pre maoista. Bellissimo!

Since the spring of this year, I’ve read through four fictions written by Kazuo Ishiguro. Some of them were boring. one was crazy. But “When We Were Orphans” was a really good novel. Ishiguro’s writing style seems to me tedious sometimes because of lengthy description of the background of the hero and situations which seems to be irrelevant to the main plot. But “When We Were Orphans” is the meticulously constructed, skillfully written novel that comes with thrill and excitement. It is also a great reading, especially for readers who have ever lived in Shanghai sometime in the past, or know the old time Shanghai.

More weirdo Japanesy than some of his other books. But still funny, sad, poignant, worthwhile....
