You could make alcohol but bread yeast has a low resistance to alcohol so it will self sterilized at a very low abv and impart strange tastes. It's Ill advised to use it for that purpose when brewers yeast is cheap and champagne yeast will give you way better abv results

Why so much more expensive than other brands?

It is not more expensive based on the $/oz. Those packages are BIG. One box could easily last a whole year.
