Why do the varying weight allowances vary handle size as well? I'm 5'3" & my hands barely fit the SM – it seems it was made for children or elves.

From my experience in 5'7" and handle on the small works fine. In fact I appreciate the less bulk to balance something that shouldn't be heavy. I'm sure it is tied to the retraction of the less that is skinny for the small vs a larger size.

It says it is a belt leach, however the picture of the meduim is a cord. Which is accurate?

Sorry I can't confirm that the medeium is belt or cord. I saw that too when I ordered mine - didn't want a cord so I went with the large instead. Was pleasantly surprised when it came that it is not bulky and would be what I would have considered the medium size to be. BTW my dog is just around 48-50 lbs and we are much happier with the belt than the cord. My neighbor was so impressed with mine that she bought it also for a dog that is 10-12 lbs lighter than mine.

is the handle is large enough for all of my fingers to fit inside? I wear a size 8 1/2 woman's glove. (This means that my hand is 8 1/2 inches around when measured at the top part of the hand, at the base of the fingers.)

My husband wears a size large men's glove and his hand fits easily in the handle. The only time it is a little snug is if he is wearing his heaviest winter gloves
